How Much do the Chinese Fail to Comply with WTO?
My biggest surprise in my economics reading last week. There are two aspects to the issue of China’s compliance with WTO obligations. First, when governments file WTO complaints against China, how does it respond in general and, more specifically, does it comply with WTO rulings against it? And second, does China comply with its WTO […] The post How Much do the Chinese Fail to Comply with WTO? appeared first on Econlib.

TRUMP TO VISIT BUCKINGHAM PALACE ON TUESDAY AMID GROWING SCANDALS, QUEEN SHOULD NOT WAIT ANY LONGER IN MY CASE

ITV's political editor Robert Peston speaks (on Twitter): The Chief Rabbi’s intervention in the general election is without precedent. I find it heartbreaking, as a Jew, that the rabbi who by convention is seen as the figurehead of the Jewish community, feels compelled to write this about Labour and its leader. I am not making any kind of political statement here. What I am saying is our democracy has traditionally been a beacon of tolerance and understanding. The Chief Rabbi says our democracy has been poisoned. I hope his intervention is a catharsis that heals but I fear the wors... more »
SCOTUS rules against Alaska big money-in-politics controversy
Thompson, et al, v Hebdon Alaska Public Office et al. remanded back to 9th Circuit by SCOTUS Why in the world is the Supreme Court deciding against the state’s right to limit outside campaign donations to its state-level elections? This appears at least on the surface to be something that should be regulated by the state for state purposes. The little-known court battle in Alaska is a challenge to big money-in-politics argument. Thompson v. I’ve found the problem; we’re no longer virtuous
Ben Franklin wrote: "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." - We cannot call ourselves virtuous if we're killing babies and sterilizing children with hormones and chemicals in the quest of a fantasy about sex. - We cannot call ourselves virtuous if we destroy dreams of our citizens because they won't submit to socialist big-think and jabberwocky. - We cannot call ourselves virtuous if we allow political reeducation camps to reside inside our colleges and universities. - We cann... more »
US Report Finds Continued Shortcomings In Iraqi Forces While Islamic State Disjointed
(Reuters) The U.S. inspector generals released the latest quarterly report on Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria. It noted continued short comings in the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) that have existed for years. On the other hand, the Islamic State is currently disjointed and unable to carry out large operations. It has plenty of opportunity to make a comeback however due to the problems with the government’s forces. The Iraqi forces cannot hold areas. The report said that the ISF is not large enough to maintain security in the country’s deserts and cleared areas such as ... more »

An appeal
Here's a curious thing that neither I nor Sue can work out. Can you, dear reader? As per Newssniffer, the BBC's Chief rabbi attacks Labour anti-Semitism record article underwent a startling sea-change around 10.30 this morning. Someone at the BBC went through the report and changed all eleven mentions of 'Chief Rabbi' to 'chief rabbi'. Neither Sue nor I can account for this abrupt but very thoroughgoing change from upper case to lower case. Can you?
Medicare for all failing bigly in Finland
Bernie Sanders cites Finland as a great example of how Medicare for All would work; only problem is that it's failing horribly. Not only are patients forced to wait forever but there are shortages of doctors and the poor quality program is financially unsustainable. For example if a child gets sick Finns can't call up and make an appointment with their doctor; they have to go into the office and wait. The wait isn't to see the doctor but to see a nurse who decides if they are eligible to see the doctor. Read the whole Legal Insurrection article linked to above to get all the details.

Impeachment coverage shows #FakeNews media bias
It turns out that when Democrat Bill Clinton was impeached for actually lying under oath not a desire by Republicans to undo an election, the #FakeNews media televised a lot less of the hearings than they did when dishonest Democrats like Adam Schiff staged a coup under the guise of an impeachment. TN: Doubling Down On Bad Reading Policy
Among the worst policy ideas of the past decades, we have to count third grade reading retention laws. These laws can sometimes give schools a brief bump in test scores, but the consequences for actual human students are not good. And some folks in Tennessee have decided that more of a bad idea would be super. Why tell a eight or nine year old child that they failed third grade, even though they did passing work on everything but the reading test? The theory is that third grade reading ability correlates with later academic success, and since too many policy makers don't know the di... more »

This and that for your Tuesday reading. - Joseph Stiglitz writes about the dangers of measuring economic and social progress solely in terms of GDP: It is clear that something is fundamentally wrong with the way we assess economic performance and social progress. Even worse, our metrics frequently give the misleading impression that there is a trade-off between the two; that, for instance, changes that enhance people’s economic security, whether through improved pensions or a better welfare state, come at the expense of national economic performance.
