For Earth Day—no savings with electric cars

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 9 hours ago
"According to the study directed by Christoph Buchal of the University of Cologne, published by the Ifo Institute in Munich last week, electric vehicles have "significantly higher CO2 emissions than diesel cars." That is due to the significant amount of energy used in the mining and processing of lithium, cobalt, and manganese, which are critical raw materials for the production of electric car batteries." And then what do you do with all those batteries? I found a report of this in several publications with no link to the research, but had to dig some to get the name of the stud... more »

How Russia Can Help Break the Deadlock with North Korea

Lyle J. Goldstein at Test Feed Using Fields - 9 hours ago
*Lyle J. Goldstein* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] A Putin-Kim summit will mainly be another photo-op for the North Korean leader. But Moscow has more cards to play in Pyongyang than is commonly realized. One interpretation of the stunning victory of Volodymyr Zelensky in the Ukraine elections is that Ukrainians are tired of serving as pawns in the New Cold War. On practically the other side of the world from Ukraine, many Koreans might justly feel the same way. While Americans frequently seem to want to divide up the world neatly into black and white camps, those on the a... more »

Saddam Hussein Could Have Sunk America's Most Powerful Battleship Ever

FLYNN - Source, Generally, Specifically, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1474829] However, there is a few conditions we need to discuss. Read on. Could Saddam Hussein’s armed forces have sunk a U.S. Navy battleship? That might seem like a question destined to launch an excursion into alt-history, but it was far from hypothetical to the 3,200 or so crewmen of the battleships USS Wisconsin and Missouri who squared off against Iraq in 1991. It was daily life, especiall... more »

Nuclear Death Wish? Why Did These B-52 Bombers Fly at Wave-Top Heights?

Political Games Have Damaged NATO's Security on the Black Sea

Isabela Mares at Test Feed Using Fields - 9 hours ago
*Isabela Mares* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Domestic squabbles and American-French defense firms competing for buyers may have endangered the alliance. We are repeatedly reminded of the looming political threat posed by Russia on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s northern border. However, NATO’s South-eastern border remains the most vulnerable frontier of the North Atlantic alliance. The Black Sea is an area of strategic importance connecting Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The New F-15X: This Could Be a Poor Man's F-35 (But Is It a Good Idea?)

Greg Archetto at Test Feed Using Fields - 9 hours ago
*Greg Archetto* *Security, * "Proponents of the F-35 fighter worry that any new F-15X procurement will create a future competition for resources with the previously requested F-35s. Unfortunately, this is bound to spark an unnecessary political battle, as the Air Force is currently committed to purchasing both aircraft." *While this “poor man’s F-35” may serve a niche of being more capable than 4th generation fighters but not quite as stealthy, the Pentagon should be wary of swooning at the courting rituals that captured its heart (and wallet) with the F-35. Russia Sees Its Future in China and Eurasia

Christopher Marsh at Test Feed Using Fields - 9 hours ago
*Christopher Marsh* *Security, Eurasia* [image: Reuters] Putin’s ambitions reach beyond Russia’s near abroad and to the international system itself, in which it seeks to regain and retain its position as a great power. One of the most significant questions surrounding Russian foreign policy and U.S.-Russian relations is whether or not Russian president Vladimir Putin has an overarching strategy or if he is merely reacting to international events as they unfold. If one considers Putin’s actions and behavior since the mid-2000s (certainly since his speech at the 2007 Munich Confer... more »

When there's no room to "duck and cover"

I've had a couple of hairy experiences with road debris being flung up by vehicles ahead of me, striking my car. It's no fun at all, and often very scary because one can't always turn the wheel to dodge the oncoming missile. A few years ago, Miss D. and I were in a rented vehicle on an interstate when a truck ahead of us kicked up a large piece of gravel. It seemed to move in slow motion as we watched it coming right into our windscreen, as if we had a bullseye target painted on our car. There was traffic on either side of us, so we had nowhere to go. Did Trump obstruct justice? 5 questions Congress must answer

David Orentlicher, Professor of Law and Co-Director, Health Law Program, University of Nevada, Las Vegas at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 16 hours ago
Mueller's report describes more than a dozen times Trump may have broken the law. Here's how Congress will decide whether the president obstructed justice during federal probes into his presidency.

What happens when a big business tries to take over and rename a neighborhood

Raechel A. Portelli, Assistant Professor of Geography, Michigan State University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 16 hours ago
Google, Amazon and other powerful groups are renaming American cities and neighborhoods. That may make the area more appealing to newcomers – but, in many cases, residents aren't happy.

How Ukraine's new President once played the role on TV — and is now the real deal

Christina Zhou at Just In - 16 hours ago
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a comedian whose only political experience consists of playing a president in a TV series, has achieved a landslide victory in Ukraine's presidential election. But who is this dark horse candidate and how did he win?

Shifting to obstruction

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 16 hours ago
When you checkmate a dishonest person in an argument, they shift the discussion, insisting this second concern always animated their position. This describes the response to the Mueller Report from the conspiracy-theory wing of the Democratic Party. They now talk in muted terms, if at all, about Donald Trump conspiring with an unfriendly nation to rig the 2016 presidential election. Instead, they obsess over obstruction of justice, a crime Mueller’s investigators seem agnostic about in noting it could neither prove obstruction nor exonerate the president. Such mental gymnastics se... more »

Identity politics—guest blogger Patti

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 16 hours ago
I didn't see this one by Patti York when it first appeared in November. . .and thought her analysis of identity politics and being treated like a victim was worth sharing. Her points may give you strength to resist the "poor little me" feeling for the hate and anger you experience. I wouldn't go so far to say I love any president, whether Ike, Reagan or Trump, but I do admire the way Trump energizes and sticks up for the people the two parties have ignored and marginalized—especially the low income, blue collar and minorities. From the WalkAway website (for people who have left th... more »

A blessed Easter

Norma at Collecting My Thoughts - 16 hours ago
Our pastoral, church staff and volunteers went all out for Holy Week at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. There were two high lights in a week of wonderful worship experiences. At the Friday night solemn service, there were several teens participating, and one young girl was tasked with lighting seven candles between the scripture passages read by the pastor and two other teens. She was taller than me, but the candles were high enough and in a clear glass globe, that her arms were just not quiet long enough even stretched well above her head. After she struggled with the first ... more »

The 12 Biggest Myths about Raising Taxes on the Rich Some politicians are calling for higher taxes on the rich. Naturally, these proposals have unleashed a torrent of opposition – mostly from…the rich. Here are the 12 biggest myths they’re propounding: *Myth 1: A top marginal tax rate applies to all of a rich person’s total income or wealth. * Wrong. It would only apply to dollars in excess of a certain level. The 70 percent income tax rate proposed by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would apply only to dollars in excess of 10 million dollars a year. The 2 percent wealth... more »

*Socialism for the Rich, Capitalism for the Rest * “We renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country,” Donald Trump said recently. Someone should alert him that America is now a hotbed of socialism. But it’s socialism for the rich. Everyone else is treated to harsh capitalism. In the conservative mind, socialism means getting something for doing nothing. This pretty much describes General Motors’ receipt of $600 million in federal contracts, plus $500 million in tax breaks, since Trump took office. Some of this corporate welfare has gone into the pockets of GM... more »

Robert Reich - 16 hours ago
*Everything You Need to Know About the New Economy* The biggest economic story of our times isn’t about supply and demand. It’s about institutions and politics. It’s about *power*. The median annual earnings of full-time wage and salaried workers in 1979, in today’s dollars, was $43,680. The median earnings in 2018 was $45,708. If between 1979 and 2018, the American economy almost tripled in size, so where did the gains go? Most went to the top. Now this is broadly known, but there is less certainty about why. *1. The Conventional View * Conventional wisdom attributes the wid... more »

You see the flashing blue lights, and your heart drops. Oh no, you think, I’m going to get a ticket. WKB: Oh c’mon, Robert. You aren’t going to get a ticket. Robert Reich - 16 hours ago
Why Unions Matter to You As I travel around the country, I tell people: if you have a job, join a union. And if you don’t have a union, start one. You see, it all comes down to the balance of power between business and workers. *You strengthen the middle class by strengthening unions. * In the mid-1950s, unions were strong, and wages grew in tandem with the economy. Nearly one third of all workers in the United States were unionized. This gave workers across America – even those who weren’t unionized – significant power to demand and get better wages, hours, benefits, and ... more »

*THE YUGE REPUBLICAN LIE ABOUT THE DEFICIT* When asked about America’s soaring debt and deficits, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell lamented “It’s disappointing, but it’s not a Republican problem,” and he blames Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Rubbish. It’s not social spending that’s causing the federal deficit to soar. It’s Republican tax cuts, especially on corporations and the wealthy. Look at the evidence. Of all 35 advanced economies, America’s spending on social programs like Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid is among the lowest, as you can see. Also, A... more »

Robert Reich - 16 hours ago
*What’s the Real American Story? * Donald Trump has perfected the art of telling a fake story about America. The only way to counter that is to tell the real story of America. Trump’s story is by now familiar: he alone will rescue average Americans from powerful alien forces – immigrants, foreign traders, foreign politicians and their international agreements – that have undermined the wellbeing of Americans. These forces have been successful largely because Democrats, liberals, “socialists,” cultural elites, the Washington establishment, the media and “deep state” bureaucrats ha... more »

Robert Reich - 16 hours ago
*A Bold New Idea to Boost Wages* The challenges are well known: Working Americans are struggling to keep up with the increasing cost of living. Unemployment is low, but wages of most Americans have remained flat. More than three-quarters of Americans are now living paycheck to paycheck. Most can’t afford a $500 emergency. There’s a simple and bold solution that would cost about as much as the Trump tax cut. But instead of helping corporations and the rich, it would help millions of working and middle-class Americans by putting money directly in their pockets. I’m talking about ex... more »

Robert Reich - 16 hours ago
*WHO WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT?* The presidential primaries will soon be heating up, and the betting has already begun over which Democrat has the “*money advantage*,” who’s sufficiently “*moderate*,” and who can “*beat Trump*” (assuming he’ll be running again). Pardon me, but if you want to know who will be the next president, these are exactly the wrong criteria. First: raising money from big donors is far less important than it used to be. In recent campaigns, Democratic challengers have drawn in millions from small donors — just look at Bernie Sanders in 2016 and Beto O'Ro... more »
