Crime And Punishment And #MeToo
*John Lasseter and Emma Thompson* I have no idea how reliable Radio Free Asian is-- though I would guess not very. Last week they reported that "North Korean authorities staged a public trial and shot two female fortune tellers to death last month, forcing tens of thousands of people to watch, in what appeared to be a resumption of public executions. The executions of the two women took place in March in North Hamgyong’s Chongjin city, and were aimed at forcing officials to stop patronizing fortune tellers and engaging in other 'superstitious' behavior, according to two sources who ... more »

At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate." - "Grey's Anatomy"
"The Hound In The Kennel"
*"The Hound In The Kennel"* by John James "In my experience most of us take whatever frightens us or makes us uncomfortable and push it out of sight. This puts it into the unconscious. It does not disappear, but just lies in waiting like a faithful hound until let out. Meanwhile the conscious part can go on living as if nothing had happened. But as Carl Jung pointed out so perspicaciously, the hound keeps howling from the depth and thereby influences all that we do. So we can’t go on as before. We may try to carry on as always, but in truth everything we do is influenced by the un... more »
A Rocket Deal That Will Make Waves in the South China Sea
*Stratfor Worldview* *Security, Asia* [image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/usnavy/40597819333/sizes/l] Here is what you need to know. *What Happened* The waters of the South China Sea could soon be heating up once more. This week, the South China Morning Post reported that the United States and the Philippines discussed the placement of an upgraded High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in the contested body of water to defend against China's militarization of its artificial islands in the area. The report, however, said Washington and Manila failed to reach a deal beca... more »
A Proposed Missouri Law Requiring Residents To Own an AR-15 Is Not What It Seems
*Task and Purpose* *Security, United States* Here is the real story. A new bill introduced in the Missouri House of Representatives would require a significant number of state residents own "at least one" AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with the help of a hefty tax break — except it won't ever get off the ground. The so-called "McDaniel Militia Act," introduced by State Rep. Andrew McDaniel last week, would mandate all adult Missourians between the ages of 18 and 35 (and not already prohibited from owning a firearm) acquire an AR-15 rifle within a year of the legislation's passage. ... more »
"It's Not Until The End..."
"Using time, pressure and patience, the universe gradually changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls, and coal into diamonds. You're being worked on too, so hang in there. Just because something isn't apparent right now, doesn't mean it isn't happening. It's not until the end do you realize, sometimes your biggest blessings were disguised by pain and suffering. They were not placed there to break you, but to make you." - "The Angel Affect" "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world the master calls a butterfly." - Richard Bach

“24 Life Lessons By An Old Greek Shepherd”
*“24 Life Lessons By An Old Greek Shepherd”* by George Giotis, Greece by Greeks *1. “The road to the destination is never straight.* To reach out to the winter shelter someone must take a lot of turns, travel along rough roads, suffer losses. You have to make sure that you always take food supplies with you. *2. Leave the past behind.* If a wolf eats your goat, you can't do anything about it. "Just Remember..."
"I know the world seems terrifying right now and the future seems bleak. Just remember human beings have always managed to find the greatest strength within themselves during the darkest hours. When faced with the worst horrors the world has to offer, a person either cracks and succumbs to ugliness, or they salvage the inner core of who they are and fight to right wrongs. Never let hatred, fear, and ignorance get the best of you. Keep bettering yourself so you can make the world around you better, for nothing can improve without the brightest, bravest, kindest, and most imaginative... more »
The Poet: Grace Schulman, “Blessed Is The Light”
*“Blessed Is The Light”* “Blessed is the light that turns to fire, and blessed the flames that fire makes of what is burns. Blessed the inexhaustible sun, for it feeds the moon that shines but does not burn. Praised be hot vapors in earth's crust, for they force up mountains that explode as molten rock and cool like love remembered. Holy is the sun that strikes sea, for surely as water burns life and death are one. Holy the sun, maker of change, for it melts ice into water that bruises mountains, honing peaks and carving gullies. Sacred is the mountain that promises permanence but chan... more »

unless love had the built-in self-defense
* Blessed *hearts, unless love had the built-in self-defense of its own self-preservaion the fallen ones would long ago have swallowed it up. But it was not to be; and it could not be; and it cannot. For you see, the ruby ray itself is the eesential, I say, *essential* element of love whereby all anti-love as hatred is turned in upon itself and self-consumed. Therefore by the right hand of Serapis I send the ruby ray as radiating light, as the corona of this sphere of Our causal body, even the causal body of the Great White Brotherhood! Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis
Broadsheet litcrits consider *Glamorama* among the blackest of Bret Easton Ellis's sheep. It's over long, it's repetitive, it goes nowhere, it's needlessly graphic, and dwells too hard on the superficiality of consumer culture like so many novels have done. For a novel heavily and self-consciously laden with mid-late 90s fashionistas, getting panned as unoriginal and derivative upon publication is pain indeed. Yet this is to miss a trick. *Glamorama* is a novel of its time, like all novels are, and was absolutely tethered to the contemporary *zeitgeist*. The 'critique of consumeris... more »

"We are entering a dangerous social condition in which the direct expression of opinions that conflict – or merely seem to conflict – with a narrow set of orthodoxies is instantly punished by a band of self-appointed vigilantes. We are being cowed into abject conformity around a dubious set of official doctrines and told to adopt a world view that we cannot examine for fear of being publicly humiliated by the censors." #QotD
*"Then there is Islamophobia. It seems that by questioning this word and pointing to its origin in the Muslim Brotherhood’s propaganda campaigns I am somehow showing myself to be guilty of the offence that it describes. I deplore the current use of this word, since it implies that there is some peculiar and irrational state of mind from which all objections to Islam proceed. I myself distinguish Islam, as a faith and a way of life, from the radicals who commit crimes in its name. I have a respect and tenderness towards the first of those, and a hatred of the second. Trump And Jewish Americans
The last time I was in a synagogue was in 2016 in St Petersburg when I went to see if I could reconnect with my grandfather's spirit, who had spent his last night in his native Russia there before fleeing to America as a young boy in 1905. Nice building but my grandfather's spirit wasn't there. He wasn't very religious and his spirit would be more likely to be hanging out in a socialist workers club. He identified as a Jew, as do I, proudly so, if not religiously. I have to admit that a week ago, I was incensed with Adelson's Kapo Klub Konclave in Las Vegas, incensed enough to writ... more »

Why I’m Not Defending Representative Ilhan Omar Anymore
A month and a half ago, upon witnessing Representative Ilhan Omar being targeted by the bipartisan Zionist and war by any means caucus, I jumped to action and defended her from bigots who weaponized antisemitism in order to silence criticism of Israel’s policies. Realizing that politicians have perfected the art of using human suffering as human shields in order to deflect attention from their insidious policies, I pushed back strongly against a coordinated campaign to… The post Why I’m Not Defending Representative Ilhan Omar Anymore appeared first on The Ghion Journal.
