5 Reasons No Nation Can Beat the U.S. Army in a War

"Finding Our Way Back..."

“Biology says that we are who we are from birth. That our DNA is set in stone. Unchangeable. Our DNA doesn't account for all of us though, we're human. Life changes us. We develop new traits. Become less territorial. We start competing. We learn from our mistakes. We face our greatest fears. For better or worse, we find ways to become more than our biology. The risk of course is that we can change too much to the point where we don't recognize ourselves. Finding our way back can be difficult. There's no compass, no map. We just have to close our eyes, take a step, and hope to God w... more »

Prescription Opioid Use By Congressional District

If you want to map opioid prescription use, you can do it, right down to Congressional district. The highest rates are in the southeastern U.S., Appalachia and the rural west, all areas where there is more manual labor, according to an analysis in *American Journal of Public Health*. The authors believe this could help policy makers at the federal and state level better target intervention and prevention strategies, though statistics have shown prescription use is not the problem, illegal recreational use is. read more

QotD: After Trump’s comments at this week’s press conference, Putin's FSB "ought to hang up a 'Mission Accomplished' banner."

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 11 hours ago
*"Yet Putin doesn’t have to tip elections to achieve his goal. He achieves it merely by sowing chaos and discord, which serves his goal of discrediting free countries as a superior model of government... The more conflict Putin sows in the West, the more he is able to point to the world’s vaunted democracies and sneer that this kind of 'normal life' is all an arrogant delusion. "From that perspective, Donald Trump’s presidency is a triumph of Putin’s information war. *Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * A plane truly like no other. *For several decades, the F-117 offered the United States military a unique ability to slip through enemy air defenses and takeout high value targets with its precision guided bombs. However, the Nighthawk’s first-generation stealth technology limited the roles it could fulfill, and decades of advancement have pushed the envelope further in what stealth technology can achieve.* The F-117 Nighthawk, America’s original stealth plane with a deeply sinister appearance, is an example of a weapon system designed around the ... more »

Firing a Bad Federal Employee May Get a Little Easier

Your First Memory May Not Be Real

News Staff at Science 2.0 blogs - 12 hours ago
Neuroscientists believe that people's earliest memories date from around three to three-and-a-half years of age but many people report memories much earlier than that. It's likely just as fake as claims of repressed memories from the 1980s. At least according to surveys, which are just as unreliable as science claims about memory. Survey results of people's first memories found that 38.6 percent of 6,641 people claimed to have memories from two or younger, with 893 people claiming memories from one or younger. This was particularly prevalent among middle-aged and older adults. ... more »

More Government Grammar Schools Don't Lead To Better Outcomes For Poor Kids

News Staff at Science 2.0 blogs - 12 hours ago
Over 25 years ago, members of Congress saw statistics showing that U.S. people with college educations made more money, and they declared that college education should be a right. The solution was indicative of government - change student loans to being unlimited. Are young people all making more money? No, they are buried in debt, but schools that were once foundering are now doing quite well. An entirely industry built up around universities for under-achieving students with money. And on the other end, credentialism came into play. A bachelor's degree became what a high school di... more »
