"And With Such A People..."
“If everyone always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but that no one believes anything at all anymore - and rightly so, because lies, by their very nature, have to be changed, to be ‘re-lied,’ so to speak. A lying government pursuing shifting goals has to ceaselessly rewrite its own history, leaving people not only dispossessed of their ability to act, but also of their capacity to think and to judge, and with such a people you can then do what you please.” Hannah Arendt

25 Myths; Debunked
I came across an unusual blog post in the Times of Israel. It is unusual for a couple of reasons. Firstly because it did what it said on the tin, which is to debunk 25 of the most ubiquitous - what shall we call them? I suggest ‘smears’. Yes, they are *genuin*e smears, against Israel. if I have to spell it out, I’m using the term in its strictest sense, (damage the reputation of (someone) by false accusations; slander) and not as a trumped-up smokescreen, as in the tactic infamously used by the antisemites in the Labour Party to mask the truth. The second reason the blog post is ... more »
Kanye and Trump
Although I don't think Kanye's remarks were political or economic (I think it was plain old friendship), the Democrats are deathly afraid of economic revitalization for American blacks. If Trump succeeds, they could possibly lose a locked down voting block. He must be stopped, even if the rising middle class will be hurt. Electing black politicians has never helped black citizens; education, strong families, and creation of businesses has always been the way. Many of our largest cities have powerful political machines from the black population, and still the city struggles. Govern... more »

DACA Rescission 2.0
The Trump administration’s plan to wind down DACA, the deferred action policy that grants lawful presence to certain aliens, has been halted by several federal courts. While I have criticized such rulings in light of the deference due to the executive branch in this context, I freely concede that the government justification to rescind the policy was lacking. My recommendation: “The attorney general should issue an additional opinion that explains why he concluded DACA is unconstitutional.” To date, the government has been unwilling to take up this proposal on its own volition. Zero D’Eh: Canada Takes a Bold Step Towards Offensive Cyber Operations
Canada is going on the attack—at least in cyberspace. As Canada undergoes the most comprehensive national security legislation reform in over three decades, one of the most notable proposed changes in the sweeping Bill C-59 would empower Canada’s signals intelligence agency, the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), to engage in offensive cyber operations. CSE is the Canadian equivalent of the National Security Agency or the U.K. General Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). The shift toward CSE’s engagement in so-called “active cyber,” responds to at least two trends. First,... more »

"The Only Absolute..."
"Never perceive anything as being inevitable or predestined. The only absolute is uncertainty." - Lionel Suggs "Humans may crave absolute certainty; they may aspire to it; they may pretend, as partisans of certain religions do, to have attained it. But the history of science- by far the most successful claim to knowledge accessible to humans- teaches that the most we can hope for is successive improvement in our understanding, learning from our mistakes, an asymptotic approach to the Universe, but with the proviso that absolute certainty will always elude us." - Carl Sagan

Arthur Koestler in *The Act of Creation* notes that on one end of the scale we have discoveries which involve some kind of conscious, logical reasoning, and on the other end there are the sudden insights which seem to emerge from the depth of the unconscious. In such a situation the motorist’s skills as a driver will not help him; to reach the frontier, he must play a complet... more »

Yes, our civilization can fall, too
Borepatch embedded a very short, but very interesting analysis by Kenneth Clark on why Rome fell. It's only two and a half minutes long, and well worth that much of your time to watch it. Our modern civilization can fall, too, and in a surprisingly short time. It's happened right before our eyes multiple times over the past half-century. Think of the Soviet Union in the late 1980's, or Venezuela over the past five years. It could happen even to the USA or Western Europe, if enough of the storm clouds gathering over either economy were to let loose. (Think of what would hap... more »

Grammar is too mathematical: SJWs will turn Czech into gym, too
SJWs are gradually replacing the kids' classes of mathematics by dumb, repetitive, mechanical exercises that every kid can solve without any help or leadership – while the leadership itself (and any insight that is communicated from the teacher to her student) is presented as crime. For approximately 24 hours a day, fans of these methods repeat the proposition that mathematics is "unpopular" and must therefore be "reformed" – and their reform is basically equivalent to the elimination of any nontrivial mathematical thinking from schools. Last night, the Czech Public TV has informed ... more »

This I was not aware of, will a BBC interviewer raise the question with all members and supporters from the Labour Party? The improbable story of the cranberry’s path to global domination
There is a serious economic lesson here. It is that the prime agency for the industry is what we often call a monopoly player in terms of the marketing, but a forced buyer in terms of actual production. The company itself is actually owned by those producers thus they have not been able to drive prices down and bankrupt producers in order to suppress private ownership to their advantage. I do think that this is the way agriculture must organize itself. Producers do need long term premium purchase contracts because the marketing company can push costs out which the producer c... more »

Why nuclear fusion is gaining steam
It is thriving because multiple approaches are suddenly been explored and the related drumming is attracting finance. all good. Yet I do think that someone out there has produced a resonance void which then triggered a first tier matter spark. It was too small to produce hydrogen or even a flood of dark matter and charged up electrons. Yet scaling up should not be difficult at all. The radiation flood may well do all we need. Thus a resonance void producing decaying neutron pairs may also be possible. This would produce massive power and it would be easy to tap. The initi... more »

Actually doing something meaningful to disrupt institutional inequality would be way too much work; so why not just Rent-A-Minority instead? *We have a minority for every occasion.* Whether it’s a tech conference panel, an awards show,... more »

Courtesy Raw Story: *Attorney Michael Avenatti appeared Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” where he gave a wide-ranging interview on the lawsuit against the president and a related criminal investigation of Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen — and he said reporting on the case had missed an important detail. * *“So, Mika, you are familiar with the fact that a week ago, Judge (Kimba) Wood ordered Michael Cohen’s attorneys to disclose all of his clients for the last three years,” Avenatti said, “and there were three clients listed — t... more »
Back from the road
Miss D. and I headed down to Fort Worth today for a little official business, plus some "us"-time. It's two-plus hours from here to there, so it's no trouble to go down and back in a day. The official business didn't take long, so we looked for something interesting to see when we were done. We ended up at the Texas Civil War Museum. It has a large number of exhibits about the lives and equipment of regular soldiers on both sides, with emphasis on the (named) individuals who owned many of the items on display, including a surprising number of general officers. Among their most ... more »

The Story of How the F-35 Might Have Some Russian 'Blood'
*Task and Purpose, Brad Howard* *Security, Europe* Well, at least one of the variants of the F-35, that is. For all the yelling and shouting over the Department of Defense’s much-maligned F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, there’s an unusual, often overlooked footnote in the trillion-dollar project’s history: its origins as an experimental Soviet fighter that only fell into Lockheed Martin’s lap because a desperate Russian aerospace company needed some cold, hard cash. Before the F-35, there was the Yak-141 ‘Freestyle’ multi-role vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fighter born... more »
How Israel Shot Down 5 Russian MiGs in 3 Minutes
*Michael Peck* *History, Middle East* And Moscow was not happy. On July 30, 1970, five Soviet MiG-21 fighters were blown out of the sky by the Israeli Air Force. And all in three minutes. As America, Russia and Israel today face off in Syria, the story forty-eight years ago sounds ominously familiar. A Soviet client state—Egypt at the time—was in trouble. Humiliated by crushing defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War, Egypt's president Gamal Abdel Nasser chose to confront Israel without risking defeat in open battle: the War of Attrition of 1967–70 would see constant Egyptian artillery ... more »
