Bad news: bombardment of Syria, Michael Cohen in Prague

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 8 minutes ago
Last night, it seemed that the Syrian tension was fading away. Erdogan also claimed that it did. Suddenly, we woke up on Saturday to see the news. In a 7-minute speech, Trump announced a new bombardment of Syria justified by the alleged chemical attacks. America, Britain, and France are participating. I was terribly angry at the beginning but was careful not to prematurely add fuel to the fire. After a few minutes, details emerged that it's not so bad. First, Trump et al. are trying (so far successfully) to avoid the bombardment of any Russian interests and personnel – because Russi... more »

Virtue signalling, a definition

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 5 hours ago
*Virtue signalling*, aka halo-polishing, *n.,* "the act of publicly flagging your alleged moral piety, while shaming others who aren’t on the same holy plane; a bedfellow of ‘clicktivism’ and hashtag activism– or ‘hashtivism'." A form of second-handed activism: parading convictions you know in advance are acceptable to others simply to enhance your group status (see also *People's Republic of Grey Lynn*); conspicuously posing rather than actually doing, esp., loudly expressing opinions or sentiments intended only to demonstrate one's adherence to the cause of the day; acting so ... more »

*Drying millet* A longtime observer sent this around the intertubes (posted with permission): Also, this announcement seems very similar to an event announced in September 2015. At the time, analysts from Taiwan noted that the initial announcement used the term "off the coast of Fujian." That one was pulled and replaced the next day with the term "Taiwan Strait," which gives routine training a purposefully amplified political effect. That's certainly possible in this case as well. Way back when, as the result of an old injury and some not-very-well-made repairs, I ended up getting all my upper teeth removed, and was fitted with a full upper denture. Of course, one's jaw shape changes over time, particularly as one gets older, and one needs to have new dentures made. I had that done for the third time in Nashville, the year before Miss D. and I moved to Texas. The denture was never very satisfactory compared to the first two. *Russian Political Panelist has Trump's Number* While it appears from a cursory browse of this morning's headlines that the West has "walked" back from the brink of nuclear Armageddon that its Ziofascist controllers have dragged the world to earlier this week, IMO this is likely not the case.
