There are no Clintons holding public office now, and it's unlikely there will be any in the future unless Chelsea or one of her kids decides to run. So there's not much going on in America that Maureen Dowd can blame on Bill or Hillary. Therefore, we can blame Hillary and Bill counterfactually for the continued suppression of this story that didn't actually happen. Dowd writes: Would the war against preying on...more »

Recently proposed restrictions of terrorist incitement, beyond what is already unprotected, are unworkable. The law cannot reach internet speech that originates overseas, and restrictions on reading such material cannot give readers adequate notice of what is banned. There is also value in permitting readers to expose themselves even to evil and destructive views. When people are treated as adults, they may make bad choices, but free people have to be permitted to contemplate such choices. I elaborate in a new paper in the Fordham Law Review, here, part of a “Terrorist Incitement on...more »

Yes, I thought that the “pirate’s chest” that had been mentioned would be something found on the island. There seemed to be a hint that this was going to prove that there was money in the Money Pit. But, no. What we le...more »

*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * The Tu-22M3 is getting a big upgrade. Well, maybe. Russia is planning to upgrade its fleet of Tupolev Tu-22M3 Backfire intermediate range bombers with new engines and avionics. The first of 30 modernized supersonic bombers will make its first flight next year if all goes as planned. "The first heavily upgraded Tu-22M3 will take to the skies in 2018,” Tupolev chief executive officer Alexander Konyukhov told the Moscow-based TASS news agency on November 17. “Also in that year, the modernization of operational aircraft will begin in compliance with the...more »
*Michael Peck* *Security, Europe* Nope. Not fake news. Rich businessmen around the world want Russia to turn its Tupolev-160 strategic bomber into a private jet. And Russia is saying *nyet*. A senior Tupolev executive claims that the aircraft manufacturer has turned down many requests to civilianize its Tu-160 (NATO codename Blackjack), a long-range strategic bomber that resembles America's B-1 Lancer, and its TU-22M3 Backfire bomber. "Big business tycoons in different countries (an Arab sheikh, a millionaire in Australia and a wealthy Greek among them) keep asking us to make ...more »
*Michael Peck* *Security, Europe* History teaches valuable lessons to Moscow's military planners. The lessons learned section of a U.S. Army analysis of urban warfare is mostly a no-brainer: urban combat is long, costly, burns out troops and resources, combined arms warfare is essential, and so on. Lessons that many armies, competent or not, have realized after scores of city fights going back to Stalingrad and Hue. But what particularly interesting about this study by the U.S. Army’s Asymmetric Warfare Group is how Russia learned to fight in cities. The study, titled “Modern U...more »
*Kyle Mizokami* *Security, Asia* What would happen in a Second Korean War? North Korea’s whirlwind of strategic ballistic missile testing has captured the world’s attention. The reclusive, impoverished country has developed missiles that many analysts believe can reach as far as the United States. While alarming, Pyongyang has also made considerable progress on the tactical rocket front, developing precision-guided rockets that can strike targets miles a hundred or more miles south of the demilitarized zone. The Korean People’s Army (KPA) made a considerable investment in field ...more »
*Task and Purpose, Jared Keller* *Security, Middle East* ISIS is challenging the notion that American forces own the night. In 1991, the overwhelming success of night vision-equipped U.S. troops in the Gulf War inspired a brand new axiom of the modern American military: We own the night. But new ISIS propaganda video, released following the expulsion of the terror group from their last de facto stronghold in Raqqa, has a clear message for Western forces: Not anymore. The six-minute video, “Snipers of the South – Wilāyat al-Janūb” published to social media on Nov. 10 shows an ISIS...more »
CFACT Senior Policy Advisor Paul Driessen, a Virginia resident, laments the direction that newly elected Governor Ralph Northam is taking the people of the state -- into restrictions on carbon dioxide that include cap-and-trade emissions buying and selling -- and other foolish schemes that will harm the poor and lower middle classes the most and do little or nothing to change the Earth's climate.

Alas, there are virtually no good Republicans any longer, even if, occasionally, a Republican-- a McCain or a Walter Jones or a Justin Amash-- does something good. Electorally, it virtually never happens that a Democrat, no matter how awful is worse than a Republican. When I was growing up in New York, Republican John Lindsey was better than Democrat Abe Beame. More recently (2012) Michigan Democrats ran a vicious homophobic conservative turd, Steve Pestka, against Justin Amash. Incredibly, overall, Amash was the better candidate. What *kind* of Democrat matters. There are good on...more »

*"Tripping the Switch Fantastic"* By Julian Wash "Dear Humans, Today I would like to return to your awareness an aspect of the Human condition that can toggle between the worlds of internal and external experience. This “switch” enables us to compare and contrast what we hold to be true against the perceptions and opinions of others. This handy switch is essential. It promotes growth and awareness by opening doors to new ideas and possibilities while keeping us tethered to that familiar landing space we call self. It also serves as a protection device that can “switch off” stimuli...more »
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself you tasted as many as you could.” - Louise Erdrich

*“Change and Renewal”* by Paulo Coelho “When winter arrives, the trees must sigh in sadness as they see their leaves falling. They say: ‘We will never be like we were before.’ Of course. Or still, what is the meaning of renewing oneself? The next leaves will have their own nature, they pertain to a new summer that approaches and which will never be like the one that passed. Living means changing– and the seasons repeat these lessons to us every year. Changing means going through a period of depression: we still don’t know the new and we have to forget everything we used to know. Bu...more »

Animal Rescue said many of the puppies were emaciated and badly dehydrated, “struggling to survive by scavenging for food and shelter at the local dump. ”We got a call from a lady way up north, about a 10-hour drive, from High Level,” AARCS executive director Deanna Thompson told Global News on Friday. “She works in the community up there and just said that a large number of unspayed female dogs that had littered recently were in need of homes. “So we sent a crew up there and were pretty flabbergasted to find as many animals as we did. We were able to bring in 48.” The rescue was...more »
I don't have a private jet; never did. But... I sort of did. I was the president of a division of TimeWarner and the company had private jets. All I had to do was call and say I need a jet and I could fly anywhere I wanted. You knowhow many time I did that? Zero, never once. That's because it's incredibly expensive and a horrifying waste of money that could have been spent on helping break out artists (for example). But a few times I was going to New York or L.A. and someone would invite me along for a ride on *their* jet. Very convenient and comfortable, etc. But I was never temp...more »
A loyal dog is said to have died from a broken heart after she was abandoned at an airport by her owner. The distressed pet - named 'Travelling Cloud' by veterinarians who cared for her - wandered around for a month before finally being rescued by an animal shelter, but by then it was too late. After being dumped at the airport, the dog spent days walking through the terminal apparently looking for her owner, who was believed to have left on a flight. Witnesses say the animal eventually stopped looking and spent its last days at the airport laying in a corner of the terminal. Pas...more »
The latest from the Saskatchewan NDP's leadership campaign - though it's noteworthy at the outset how little of the activity in the race is taking place in the public eye. (One key exception there is the policy front, where both candidates have been very active - and which I'll address in future posts.) - I haven't focused much on endorsements so far due to the reality that both Ryan Meili and Trent Wotherspoon figured to have ample support behind them.
