The U.S. Navy Is Still Trying To Develop A Plan To Win The Wars Of The Future

*Dave Majumdar, National Interest*: *How the U.S. Navy Plans to Win the Wars of the Future * The Navy does not have enough submarines to meet the demand for undersea assets with the 52 boats currently in the fleet, which is more than the stated requirement for 48 attack subs (SSN). However, even if the Navy increases the requirement for the number of submarines, the service is physically incapable of increasing the number of boats in the fleet significantly by the late 2020s. The Las Vegas shooter: many questions, few answers

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 17 hours ago
There are so many weird things about the shooter in the Las Vegas massacre that they can make your head spin. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by any stretch of the imagination - I'm the opposite, if there is such a critter! - but I have more than a passing knowledge of what's generally called " tradecraft", based on military training and experience, working with "interesting people" from the foreign equivalent of three-letter agencies, and some exposure to law enforcement. All that background is causing my eyebrows to rise into my hairline when I read what's coming out about the Las... more »

thoughts on the latest u.s. gun massacre

laura k at wmtc - 17 hours ago
As part of my continuing efforts to post *here* rather than -- or at least in addition to -- Facebook, here are some thoughts on the latest horrific massacre in the US, the country music festival in Las Vegas. First, the inevitability of recurrence. When hearing about mass shootings in the United States, the worst part -- the most tragic, the most outrageous part -- is the certainty of knowing that nothing will change. That it will happen again, and again, and again. A solution is known, of course. We won't end the culture of violence that permeates the US, but we can end access to ...more »

5 Ways North Korea's Military Could Start World War III

*Dave Majumdar* *Security, Asia* 5 weapons, that is. *North Korea invests heavily in special operations forces to offset its conventional weakness. In 2010 it reported that the Korean People’s Army had 200,000-odd special operations forces tasked to carry out attacks on major South Korean and American facilities in South Korea, as well as assassinations of government officials. The commandos would infiltrate the South by using underground tunnels, mini-subs and Russian Antonov An-2 biplanes during a war.* Tensions are ratcheting up (again) on the Korean peninsula. Why the B-1B Lancer Bomber Could Be America's Best Option Against North Korea

Unlike the venerable Boeing B-52 and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, the Lancer—though once a nuclear-capable aircraft—has been de-nuclearized and serves as a conventional long-range strike platform. Indeed, it is likely that the task of deterring North Korea has largely fallen to the B-1B because it is no longer a nuclear-capable aircraft—there is no chance that Pyongyang can mistake its ope... more »

With 89 guns for every 100 people, the U.S. by far has the most number of guns per capita. In total, there are about 310 million weapons in the United States. While that sounds alarming, the number of guns isn't necessarily the problem. Indeed, according to CNN, several European countries have a high prevalence of gun ownership, as well. Switzerland (46 guns per 100 people), Finland (45 per 100), and Sweden (32 per 100) are all packing pretty serious heat. read more
