Why Would Anyone Expect A Political Careerist To Have A Worthwhile Campaign Message?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 13 hours ago
*Politico* was eager to remind its readers that "Democrats are just as divided as Republicans these days." When there's a lot of money at stake, isn't that always the case... not just "these days?" Some "big news" this weekend was that Hillary isn't going to run for office again. Oh. I guess there were some people who breathed a sigh of relief and some who wept a bitter tear after all that investment they put into her... but I suspect that most people just shrugged. Who ever imagined she would run again? There are plenty of corporate centrists ready to stand in for her-- from Kirs... more »

CMS Reports Evidence For Higgs Decays To B-Quark Pairs

Tommaso Dorigo at Science 2.0 blogs - 13 hours ago
Another chapter in the saga of the search for the elusive, but dominant, decay mode of the Higgs boson has been reported by the CMS collaboration last month. This is one of those specific sub-fields of research where a hard competition arises on the answer to a relatively minor scientific question. That the Higgs boson couples to b-quarks is indirectly already well demonstrated by a number of other measurements - its coupling to (third generation) quarks being demonstrated by its production rate, for example. Yet, being the first ones to "observe" the H->bb decay is a coveted goal. ... more »

I can’t wait for the day that we understand why we met the right people at the wrong time or the wrong people at the right time and why our lives didn’t align to bring us together. KID ROCK HAS LEARNED FROM DONALD TRUMP WHAT DONALD TRUMP LEARNED FROM PRO WRESTLING

Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog - 17 hours ago
In 2016, we all though Donald Trump was a self-sabotaging idiot because he kept going off on rampages against individuals he found offensive. We thought Trump was "stepping on his own message" as a political candidate when he attacked John McCain or Alicia Machado or Judge Gonzalo Curiel. Trump is president now. Beefs, especially when they're racist or sexist, apparently aren't counterproductive if you're running for office in America in the 21st century. They're seen as entertaining. It needs to be run for at least an hour and several is indicated. Obviously one takes a couple pounds to do it up and store against actual use. The Intellectual Arms Race in Philosophy

Anoop Verma at The Verma Report - 1 day ago
Here's an excerpt from Nicholas Rescher's *The Strife of Systems: An Essay on the Grounds and Implications* (Page 205 - 206): *"The history of philosophy is akin to an intellectual arms race where all sides escalate the technical bases for their positions. As realists sophisticate their side of the argument, idealists sophisticate their counterarguments; as materialists become more subtle, so do phenomenalists, and so on. At the level of basics, the same old positions continue to contest the field -- albeit that ever more powerful weapons are used to defend increasingly sophistica... more »

Robert Reich - 1 day ago
*TRUMP’S OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE* Steve Bannon recently called Trump’s firing of James Comey the biggest political mistake in modern political history. But it was more than that. It was outright obstruction of justice – another impeachable offense to add to the impeachable offenses Trump has already committed (violation of the Constitution’s “emolument’s clause,” failure to faithfully execute the laws, and abuse of power). Obstruction of justice was among the articles of impeachment drafted against both Presidents Nixon and Clinton. The parallel between Nixon and Trump is almost e... more »

The U.S. Intel Community Needs Skilled Workers

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 1 day ago
*Sandra Erwin, RCD*: *U.S. Intelligence Agencies in a Race for Skilled Workers* A massive change happened in the U.S. intelligence community after the 9/11 attacks. Agencies were realigned and bureaucracies expanded. Congress created the Director of National Intelligence position and the National Counterterrorism Center amid growing fears that the nation was unprepared for the jihadist threat. There is now a brewing debate on whether the intelligence community — a collection of 17 agencies with an annual budget of about $54 billion — may have become too narrowly focused and slow ... more »

Russia Will Have 6,000 More Tanks in Its Army

*Dave Majumdar* *Security, * The reason why is quite interesting. Russia is sharply curtailing the number of Soviet-era tanks that is planning to scrap. In previous years, Moscow had planned to send some 10,000 of its older model tanks to the junk yard for disposal, now that figure could be reduced to as few as 4,000. “Initially, when the program was drafted, it was planned that about 10,000 Soviet-made armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) stored in warehouses...will be scrapped," Lt. Why War with North Korea Could Cost Trillions of Dollars

Anthony Fensom at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Anthony Fensom* *Security, Asia* [image: North Korean military participate in the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea] Unleashing Trump's “fire and fury” on North Korea would rack up both human and financial costs. War with North Korea could result in the death of fifty thousand or more Americans and more than two million Korean casualties. However, the economic cost would be massive, too, running into potentially trillions of dollars for the United States, while damaging Asia’s biggest economies. The 1950–1953 Korean War ca... more »

*Romina Boccia* *Politics, North America* [image: Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) listens as U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with members of the Republican Congressional leadership] Republican leaders should seize the opporunity to work with Trump to enact pro-growth, fiscally responsible tax reform.
