Must Have A Wooden Head

Donald Trump wants to turn back the clock to the days when low skilled manufacturing jobs were king. That won't happen. But, Paul Krugman writes, Trump's appointment of Scott Pruitt -- climate denier and fossil fuel friend -- to run the EPA may bring back the heavy smog which used to blanket places like Los Angeles and Huston: Choking smog was quite common in major cities; in the Los Angeles area, extreme pollution alerts, sometimes accompanied by warnings that even healthy adults should stay indoors and move as little as possible, were fairly common. Boris + Q.T. + new words

Sorry for temporarily fallow blog. The way the media (the BBC and Sky) have been feasting on Boris’s recent outburst of candour was inevitable, because that’s the way things are these days. The media seems to revel in hypocritical moral outrage. Laura Kuenssberg and Norman Smith were incandescent with malicious glee. Was Theresa May’s mealy-mouthed “not the governments position” really such a severe rebuke? ‘ Will Boris keep his job?’ they wondered delightedly, hoping for a resignation so they could chew on ‘did he jump or was he pushed’ for another week or three. Boeing's Self-Licking Ice Cream Cone

I don't think that the Beltway Bandits took President Trump seriously when he said that he wanted to drain the swamp. Their problem with The Donald is that whenever he tweets or speaks, it goes around the world a dozen times or more. Thus the price tag of the new VC-25 aircraft on order (Air Force One) and it's summary rejection, blasted out of the lobby at Trump Tower, may have been a bit like slapping Dennis Muilenburg, the CEO of Boeing, in the face with a dead flounder. Blockchain technology has been making its way into the mainstream over the last year. Far from its anarchist-leaning Bitcoin beginnings, it has been getting adopted by large banks and governments like Dubai. Because of its adoption by financial institution, blockchain has become almost analogous with financial technology (fintech) in the minds of many. Even outside of fintech, the blockchain is still a wallflower in the technology world. [Listen]

The Poet: Alfred, Lord Tennyson, “In Memoriam”

*“In Memoriam”* "Oh yet we trust that somehow good Will be the final goal of ill, To pangs of nature, sins of will, Defects of doubt, and taints of blood; That nothing walks with aimless feet; That not one life shall be destroy’d, Or cast as rubbish to the void, When God hath made the pile complete; That not a worm is cloven in vain; That not a moth with vain desire Is shrivell’d in a fruitless fire, Or but subserves another’s gain. Behold, we know not anything; I can but trust that good shall fall At last–far off–at last, to all, And every winter change to spring. So runs my dream: but ... more »

"I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready, you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" - Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel "He who knows no hardships will know no hardihood. He who faces no calamity will need no courage. Mysterious though it is, the characteristics in human nature which we love best grow in a soil with a strong mixture of troubles." - Harry Emerson Fosdick

As a liberal, I'm supposed to believe that Reince Priebus is a hapless doofus, but he backed the winning (or "winning") horse in the 2016 election, he wangled a job in the White House, and now, according to *New York* magazine's Gabriel Sherman, he seems to be taking over the joint: Sources point to Trump’s early appointments of hard-liners Jeff Sessions for attorney general and Mike Flynn for national security adviser as evidence of [Steve] Bannon’s influence. But Priebus has flexed his muscle in more recent appointments such as Betsy DeVos for education secretary and RNC donors Wi... more »

Two Poles of an Evil Duopoly by Keith Rosenthal

Dandelion Salad by Keith Rosenthal socialistworker.org December 8, 2016 Why do the Democratic and Republican Parties seem to take turns as the dominant force in mainstream U.S. politics? THE DEMOCRATS and Republicans are not identical evils. But they are complementary evils. These two timeworn political institutions form distinct but dialectically interconnected parts of an oppressive […]

The problem is that Johnny doesn’t know what thinking is; he confuses it with feeling.” - Thomas Sowell “This is what happens when school administrators are concerned that everyone receives a participation trophy and coddle special snowflakes. *"Hard Learned Lessons: Bad Days"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "We all have bad days and within these days is usually a gem of a gift waiting to be opened. We all have days from time to time when it feels like the world is against us or that the chaos we are experiencing will never end. One negative circumstance seems to lead to another. You may wonder, on a bad day, whether anything in your life will ever go right again. But a bad day, like any other day, can be a gift. Having a bad day can show you that it is time to slow down, change course, or lighten up. A bad day can help... more »

Carol Adl at Your News Wire - 1 day ago
The head of Britain’s MI6 spy agency has accused Russia of being the main contributor to an “unprecedented” terrorism threat that he says the UK is currently facing.
