A Look At How General Mattis Will Run The Pentagon
*CNN*: *Inside the mind of 'Mad Dog' Mattis* (CNN)In picking Gen. Jim Mattis, President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday night that he has found his "Gen. George Patton." Yet that label may not really capture what makes Mattis a distinctive choice. Mattis has been sharply critical of President Barack Obama's policies on Iran, and Obama's capping of troop numbers and campaign end-dates in theaters of war such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Mattis also appears to be a skeptic of the Obama-era policy of putting women into combat roles. Mattis, 66, is a storied retired Marine general be... more »
More British Muslims Blame Jews For 9/11 Terror Attacks Rather Than Al-Qaeda
*Business Insider:* *Only 4% of British Muslims believe Al Qaeda planned 9/11* Only 4% of British Muslims can correctly identify who was responsible for the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center, according to a survey of conducted by centre-right think tank Policy Exchange, a non-profit education think tank. The survey — of 3,000 British Muslims from a variety of towns — also said: * 43% support the introduction of some forms of Sharia law. * 44% believe schools should be able to insist on "a hijab or niqab" as part of the uniform. * 15% believe art or music should not be... more »
Shale Oil Is OPEC's Greatest Threat
*Reuters*: *Leaner and meaner: U.S. shale greater threat to OPEC after oil price war* NEW YORK/HOUSTON In a corner of the prolific Bakken shale play in North Dakota, oil companies can now pump crude at a price almost as low as that enjoyed by OPEC giants Iran and Iraq. Until a few years ago it was unprofitable to produce oil from shale in the United States. The steep slide in costs could encourage more U.S. shale output if OPEC members cut supplies, undermining the producer group's ability to boost prices. OPEC ministers meet Wednesday to weigh output cuts to end a two-year glut ... more »

Will France Be The Next Democracy To Fall Into The Grasp Of Neo-Fascists?
About a week ago we looked at the upcoming French presidential elections from the perspective of the primary of the center-right party, Les Républicains, which have since had their run-off and selected the further right of the two party front-runners, François Fillon. The betting is now that Fillon will eventually face neo-fascist leader Marine Le Pen. But what about the Socialists, you wonder? French conventional wisdom is that they've made a hash of governing and stand no chance. In fact, this week their standard bearer, President François Hollande, announced that he won't seek ... more »

100-years Of Socialism Has Taught Us Nothing
Forced Labor in Soviet UnionThe Russian Revolution of 1917 which brought the Soviet regime to power in Russia was a pair of revolutions. The first revolution in February 1917 resulted in the old regime being replaced by a Provisional Government. In the second revolution of October 1917, the Provisional Government was removed and replaced with a Communist State. According to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the author of several harrowing books on the Soviet gulag system, the Soviet State murdered more than 60 million people during the reign of Josef Stalin. We also discussed the famed 1976 Tehran, Iran, UFO intercept in which two jet fighters attempted to approach the UFO and lost their avionics, instrumentation and power. The object was seen by an Iranian general and seen on radar as well. John talked about the documents written about the intercept, what they showed and how there was never any follow up investigation. Obama Promotes Legislation Forcing Woman To Do Military Service
President Obama has said that he wants to force women to register for the military draft, lending support for a controversial new Bill being pushed through the House. The White House announced its intention of supporting the bill in the name of “gender equality,” saying that if the draft were to be brought back, women should be forced to serve as well as men. Antiwar.com reports: The administration opened all combat roles to women, and officials say they believe expanding the registration system is a “logical next step,” ensuring “gender equality” in forcing the public to registe... more »
U.S. Catholic Church Forced To Pay $4 Billion To Child Abuse Victims

ENJOYING TRUMP'S FOREIGN POLICY SO FAR? WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR.
BooMan reminds us that it's not just Taiwan: If Trump is being advised by lunatics now, that's a problem. And if he's just so ignorant and pig-headed that he doesn't know or care what he just did by having his staff arrange a call with Taiwan, that's not a bold way of violating pointless norms. It's extraordinarily dangerous and portends all kinds of problems for our country, the world, and the prospects for peace between nations. I cannot understand how Trump was allowed to offer a state visit to Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines. It's beyond belief. That absolutel... more »
Chet Raymo, "Awww…"
*"Awww…"* by Chet Raymo “In one of his always delightful essays, Stephen Jay Gould traced the "evolution" of Mickey Mouse from the time of his creation by Disney, in 1928, to the mouse we know today. The early Mickey was a bit of a rascal - mischievous, occasionally cruel. And he looked more or less like a real adult mouse: small head in proportion to body, pointy nose compared to cranial vault, beady eyes, spindly legs. As time passed, Mickey's personality softened and his appearance changed. Head and cranium became enlarged, eyes grew to half the size of the face, limbs got pudgi... more »

The Mystery Of The Disappearances Of Malaysian Flights MH370 And MH17 Continues: SELECTIVE EVIDENCE Suddenly... We Can Get Voice Recorders Off Airplane Crashes Again. What Gives???
For the last two years I have stated clearly in this blog that I do strongly believe that when Malaysian flight MH370 "magically" disappeared off of ground radar on March 8th, 2014, that the aircraft was absolutely hijacked by the US military and diverted to their Indian Ocean military base at Diego Garcia.... I have NOT seen any evidence to this day that has changed my opinion..... Yes, we have seen many reports of debris "washing up" on the beaches of many islands in the Indian Ocean including Madagascar... But after all of that "evidence" has been carefully examined, almost all h... more »

*"How Tomorrow Could Trigger the “Most Violent Economic Shock in History”* By Nick Giambruno "It was the one moment that convinced Hitler suicide was better than surrendering. "Trump and the Taiwan Call"
*"Trump and the Taiwan Call"* by Scott Adams "By now you know that President-Elect Trump took a call from the President of Taiwan and simultaneously lit on fire the underpants of the mainstream media and maybe the leadership of China too. Apparently taking a phone call from the president of Taiwan is a major diplomatic change from the so-called “One China Policy” that imagines Taiwan as a rogue province of China, not its own country. French Lessons for the Centre Left
In ordinary times, a French president announcing they wouldn't be seeking re-election is something of a deal. Especially as none have stepped down after a single term in the history of the Fifth Republic. However, as it's 2016 this milestone will go down as but a detail. Still, you can't blame Francois Hollande for throwing in the towel. His approval ratings are among the most abysmal a Western leader has ever accrued and, as a result, the first round of the French presidential election was bound to finish with him in a heap, bruised and humiliated by a hostile electorate. All this ... more »

Dec 3: They said it! The U.S. runs dictatorships for mass murder

Guatemala was (and still is) a U.S. sponsored dictatorship. Actually, the story (on the Faith Page) doesn't say most of the above. It doesn't mention the U.S., for example. It's just a short statement that an American priest killed in that war has been named... more »

A Look At How Soldiers Will Power Their Batteries In The Future
*Army Times: **Army tests 'HALO'-inspired knee brace that can charge your radios, mobile devices* The Army is looking for a way to lighten the load of batteries soldiers have to carry around to use their gadgets, and rising to the top of the heap is a tricked-out knee brace that absorbs the energy every time your feet hit the ground. The PowerWalk, also known as the bionic power knee harvester, looks like a very tactical knee brace, but it's wired to a battery pack that can power radios and other equipment with a weight of less than 7 pounds. Did The U.S. Navy 'Steal' The Concept For Its Littoral Combat Ship?
MC1 JAMES R. EVANS/U.S. NAVY *David Axe, Daily Beast:* *Did the Navy Steal Its New Warship Designs?* It’s the cornerstone of the U.S. Navy’s future fleet. And a legendary ship-designer says the idea was all his. It’s been rough sailing for the U.S. Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship. The speedy, warship has come under fire for being lightly-armed, weakly-built, undermanned, and prone to rusting—and yet, at the same time, way too expensive. And in recent months, four of the 400-foot-long warships—half of the Littoral Combat Ships currently in commission—have suffered serious engine b... more »
MAYBE THIS IS MORE FRIGHTENING, BUT THAT TAIWAN CALL LOOKS LIKE A CALCULATED ACT
I'm sure you know about this: President-elect Donald Trump spoke Friday with Taiwan’s president, a major departure from decades of U.S. policy in Asia and a breach of diplomatic protocol with ramifications for the incoming president’s relations with China. The call is the first known contact between a U.S. president or president-elect with a Taiwanese leader since before the United States broke diplomatic relations with the island in 1979. China considers Taiwan a province, and news of the official outreach by Trump is likely to infuriate the regional military and economic power. ... more »

*USA Today*:* Closer look at the man advising Trump on Cuba policy* The words Fidel Castro have been fighting ones for Maurico Claver-Carone, the man helping President-elect Donald Trump craft policy on Cuba. As a boy when he played high school football in Orlando, Claver-Carone wore his love for the island country with at least one black sock emblazoned with the Cuban flag. And when he wasn’t on the field, Claver-Carone was already making himself an expert on Cuban history and politics, and forming strong opinions about the Castro regime. “If you ever mentioned Castro, he would g... more »

Fast, cheap, good biofuels: Can we have all 3?

Pilger: The Coming War on China
By John Pilger When I first went to Hiroshima in 1967, the shadow on the steps was still there. It was an almost perfect impression of a human being at ease: legs splayed, back bent, one hand by her side as she sat waiting for a bank to open. At a quarter past eight on the morning of 6 August, 1945, she and her silhouette were burned into the granite. I stared at the shadow for an hour or more, unforgettably. When I returned many years later, it was gone: taken away, “disappeared”, a political embarrassment. I have spent two years making a documentary film, The Coming War on Chin... more »

UN Passes Resolution Urging Israel To Leave Syria’s Golan Heights
The United Nations General Assembly has once again adopted a resolution demanding that Israel withdraw from Syria’s Golan Heights, territory that they have occupied since 1967. The resolution, which had been proposed by 37 countries, was passed by an overwhelming majority on November 30th. It called on Israel to “withdraw from all the occupied territory to the line of 4 June 1967 and called on all parties concerned to exert the necessary efforts to ensure the resumption of the peace process.” However, UN General Assembly resolutions are non-binding and no more than a ‘paper tiger’ ... more »

Tweaked Baker’s Yeast Could Make More Biofuel From Less Plant Material
We have posted on this work some years ago and now it appears to becoming fruitful. Converting plant biomass into an ethanol rich liquor is surely an excellent objective. It surely can also be made into a continuous process as well. I personally prefer that all plant waste be converted to biochar. This builds soils. Yet converting xylose to ethanol applies many places and there is always the residuals. Right now there are vast amounts of plant waste that need to be optimized coming out of factory farming. So all this is welcome. . *Tweaked Baker’s Yeast Could Make Mor... more »
