Oil Prices Continue To Plunge
*Noah Smith, Bloomberg*: *Oil's Plunge Is Great News for Most of Us*
The collapse in the price of oil is a huge source of anxiety for many
financial market participants. I suppose that’s understandable.
Investors have been very excited for the past several years about the
promise of tight oil, which is extracted by hydraulic fracturing, or
fracking, of rock formations where oil is present. This was a powerful,
simple story that asset managers and the financial media could understand,
since oil is something that almost everyone uses. The fracking boom lured
trillions of dollars in ... more »

What LAUSD needs now: Protect students from the effects of poverty
Sent to the Los Angeles Times, January 15, 2016
From "What LA Unified needs now," (January 15) it is apparent that neither
the Times nor new superintendent King know what LA Unified needs now.
The biggest problem is poverty, a problem shared by many big city school
districts. Eighty percent of LAUSD students live in poverty, far above the
national average of 25%, already unacceptable and well above that of other
industrialized countries.
High poverty means food deprivation, lack of health care, and little

Paul Craig Roberts called this blog to my attention. So I will repeat his preamble as follows: US Government Drives Toward War With Russia. The arrogant stupidity of the US government is driving the West into war with Russia. NATO members are enabling the drive toward war, and some of the more stupid ones such as Poland are egging on the momentum toward war. Russia is building up its forces in response to NATO’s buildup on Russia’s borders. On January 3rd, 2016, the commander of Russian Airborne Troops, Colonel-General Vladimir Shamanov, said that the airborne divisions will be strenthened with six tank divisions, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles and two divisions of electronic warfare. The superior capability of Russian conventional forces means that once Washington starts the war, Washington will be forced into the use of nuclear weapons in order to avoid defeat. The crazed American government is bringing the world to its end. Russia Is Preparing a Military Response to the Expansion of NATO. [End preamble]

The United States has recently enjoyed the tactical benefit of fighting
enemies incapable of matching the technological prowess of the U.S.

*A lovely Suhua Highway shot. Just because.*
*MEDIA SEA CHANGE*: DPP and Third Force success is scrambling the old media
narrative, forcing the international media to confront the necessity of
explaining why Taiwanese support the DPP and their desire to be
independent, since DPP success is so obvious the media can't ignore it.
Just think: if the KMT were doing well, none of this would be out there for
the international public to read. But TIME was right out there yesterday with
a great quote from Scott Harold at RAND:
According to Scott Harold, a China expert at think tank RAND Cor... more »
Big Coal Has Something For Folks In Mining Areas, Courtesy Of The GOP: Toxic Drinking Water
Tuesday, in all the hubbub over the State of the Union, the House sat down
to pass another piece of toxic legislation-- literally toxic legislation--
while no one was looking. They passed H.R. 1644, a bill to block the
Department of Interior’s proposed Stream Protection Rule that aims to
better protect mining communities from the harmful impacts of coal mining
pollution. It makes drinking water less safe and less clean but helps the
bottom line of the big polluters who dole out millions encamping cash to
conservative politicians in return for permission to freely dump toxic
waste ... more »

The opt-out movement seems to have worked: the new education law did not
increase the amount of required testing (except for adding some science
tests), and the president supports limits on the amount of testing done.
But the testing industrial complex is not giving up easily, working eagerly
to establish what could mean testing every day. It is called
competency-based education.

"A Look to the Heavens"
“Cosmic dust clouds ripple across this infrared portrait of our Milky Way's
satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud. In fact, the remarkable
composite image from the Herschel Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space
Telescope show that dust clouds fill this neighboring dwarf galaxy, much
like dust along the plane of the Milky Way itself. The dust temperatures
tend to trace star forming activity. Spitzer data in blue hues indicate
warm dust heated by young stars. Herschel's instruments contributed the
image data shown in red and green, revealing dust emission from cooler and
