*Will global warming kill off our pine trees?* *The modelling crap below claims it will but is most implausible. Pine trees are very widely distributed -- from the near-Arctic to the tropics. As I look down at the floor of the room where I am writing this, I see polished floorboards made of slash-pine, once super-abundant but now mostly cut out, in sub-tropical Queensland where I live. That such a versatile and hardly genus could be disturbed by a few degrees of climate change is absurd. The distribution of species might alter a little but that's it. They ha...more »

Oh boy. This is from a new witness and what startles is the behavior of the creature. It was clearly closing to kill. This means most that it had done this before and had no particular fears. Reports so far have been from missed attacks or simply the wrong place for such an attack. This is a real first. More important in terms of survivability is that is that he had the right weapon. Almost certainly most victims even if armed would still be at a severe disadvantage. This creature is huge and can take punishment. As well its metabolism is likely forty percent lower than ...more »
The numbers say that the top quarter can match the lowest quarter and participate and so they should. A rarity will make it into a higher standard. But so what? soldiers die first from their mistakes and simple bad luck and last from been over matched mano a mano. That said, all this is easily explained by the simple by simple muscle mass differences and not by skill and instincts. So let us leave it at that and allow women to be combatants. I do not oppose the idea of women in all potential levels of combat. I also do not oppose far more men been trained up to the appropriate levels. The army has been allowed to be much too choosy. After all both men and women fail out of training courses because they are not up to the requirements. However these same failures are all excellent candidates for a progressive physical training that allows them to retake the same course and to pass it. In fact the problem with all military training is that we need a high level of fitness even on entry and this needs to be corrected. ...more »

"It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us and at the same time a great openness to new ideas. If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you. On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones. The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held ...more »
*"What Was Fake On The Internet This Week: * *Why This Is The Final Column"* By Caitlin Dewey "There is nothing — NOTHING — too crazy for the Internet hoax beat. Pregnancy by flu shot? Six days of total darkness? In the past 82 weeks, I’m prettyyyy sure I’ve seen just about everything. *MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2015Those precious bodily fluids:* Try not to be shocked, but Candidate Trump was Chuck Todd's first guest on yesterday's Meet the Press. Candidate Trump appeared by phone, the highly unusual format the candidate seems to prefer. In the past, candidates haven't been afforded this luxury, which makes it easier for volk like Trump to filibuster folk like Todd. Why was Candidate Trump invited onto the program? Presumably, to boost the ratings for Meet the Press. We say that because it was abundantly clear that Todd had little or nothing to ask his famous guest. ...more »

Iraq’s parliament just passed the 2016 budget. It was based upon export figures and petroleum prices that few think are achievable. There were also questions on how many lawmakers actually voted on it as well. On December 16, 2015 Iraq’s legislature votedon the 2016 draft budget. It was for $89.75 billionwith $67.9 billion for operational costs like salaries and pensions, and $21.8 billion for investments. I highly recommend watching this German TV channel ZDF video. They speak the truth about US-NATO endless wars for oil. In the hot seat is pitiful US Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the Commanding General, of United States Army Europe. He hails from Quincy, Florida which speaks for itself. In my view the US is totally exposed for its greedy-sick-hypocrisy and the audience applause helps reveal that the people, all over the world, see the truth that the US is a 'global force for evil' and corporate interests. The only people falling for the Pentagon's propaganda any more are the majority...more »
