Sugar in the days of Koxinga
From Hui-Wen Lin. *On Colonial Industries: the Remnants of Bygone Sugar Factories in Taiwan* (International Journal of Social Science and Humanity, Vol. 5, No. 11, November 2015) When Koxinga came to Taiwan in 1661, Taiwan's sugar industry policies were still much the same as under Dutch rule, and although Koxinga's exiled Chinese regime brought along many Han Chinese immigrants and China's traditional political system, his anti-Qing stance had much the same effect as Holland had on Taiwan's sugar industry. Who Do The Millionaires Want For President? Surprise!!!
All millionaires regardless of party According to the CNBC Millionaire Survey, Hillary is the runaway favorite for president among millionaires (and billionaires) at 34%. Not many millionaires are pumpin' for Bernie, though, just 7%, same as the number who want Kasich. And if you just ask millionaires who are Democrats... well, that's Hillary's wheelhouse. She gets 76% and Bernie a mere 13%. Oddly, 2% of Democratic millionaires are for Trumpf. Russia To Develop Nanotechnology To Stop Global Warming
Russia is thinking outside of the box in trying to counter climate change. At the Paris climate change conference last week Putin announced plans to use nanotechnology to lower the globe’s greenhouse gas emissions which he say will curb any potential threat global warming poses to the planet. Putin remains skeptical that climate change is caused by man-made Co2 emissions, but has vowed to take the lead in addressing the global warming problems facing the world in a way that doesn’t line the pockets of corrupt politicians and large corporations. Pesticides On Fruit Linked To Parkinson’s Disease Say Scientists
Pesticides used on pineapples are responsible for working their way into men’s brains in Hawaii and causing Parkinson’s disease, a new study has claimed. The pineapple pesticide made its way into milk sold in Hawaii, and prompted a long series of studies that have now scientifically linked various pesticides commonly used on fruit and vegetables to Parkinson’s. NBC News reports: And the study also seems to support a mystifying observation: smokers seem to be protected against Parkinson’s. Super Earth Sized Planet Discovered In Outer Solar System
Astronomers have discovered a distant object in our solar system that they have described as a “super-Earth”. The astronomers used data from the ALMA telescopes and say they found an object in the direction of the Alpha Centauri – the closest star system to our solar system. Forbes.com reports: ALMA is capable of precise observations at short microwave wavelengths, typically emitted by cold gas and dust. But objects on the edge of our solar system also emit light in this range, and would be too cool and distant to be observed by infrared telescopes. In 2014, ALMA found a faint objec... more »

Hillary Clinton: Fight Terrorism With Love ♥
Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has told an Iowa crowd that “love and kindness” are the only tools America can use to defeat terrorism, in an uncharacteristically lovey-dovey message to hundreds of supporters during a campaign rally. *Allen Grane, National Interest:* *Accept it. The U.S. and China Both Have Bases in One East African Country.* Recently, the Chinese government closed a deal with the Djibouti government to build its first international military base. And So Begins the Ravitch Dissembling on ESSA
Even as Obama's signature was barely dry on this god-awful continuation of the NCLB testing and privatization onslaught, Diane Ravitch was already revved into "Randi Protection Mode": The Every Student Succeeds Act was released to the public on November 30, passed both houses of Congress with large majorities within 10 days, and was signed into law today by President Obama. That was fast. The good news is that No Child Left Behind is gone. There is so much we don’t know because there has been so little time to read it, discuss it, and hear different perspectives on how it will work.... more »

The Wreckage Of The House Democrats Will Never Come Back While Blue Dogs And New Dems Are Running The Show
DCCC There is a natural tendency for the Beltway trade press to never offend the two party establishments and their committees that exercise so much control of access and information. It was the same way in the music industry. So you never read any criticism of the party hacks that run the NRCC or the DCCC, the NRSC or the DSCC. I was laughing yesterday when I looked at a *Vox* post that kind of implied that it was Obama's fault that the Democrats have lost so many seats since he became president-- and nary a whisper or a hint that perhaps the incompetent and corrupt men charged with... more »

*Trump Outrage* I wasn't going to do another post on Donald Trump so soon...but events have overtaken "plans"....the Donald thing has really veered off into la la land, and needs to be put into the context of the overall morbidity of the US culture and political system. Goodbye, Middle Class. Hello, Fear
In 1971, two-thirds of Americans lived in middle class households. Today, only half do. And their numbers keep dwindling. Until very recently the vast majority of US citizens, no matter how unemployed, underemployed, and struggling they were, still considered themselves a part of the middle class. That fantasy is rapidly losing the magic perpetuated by political propaganda. Cold, hard reality is finally beginning to set in. More and more of us are willing to admit that not only are we dirt-poor, we are getting nowhere fast. In the same week that the Pew Research Center issued its s... more »

People mocking Trump are detached from reality
Since the first August post on the Trump phenomenon, the name of the candidate has appeared in about seven TRF texts. I have always argued that Trump's comparative advantage wasn't an illusion or a temporary fluke. It was a reflection of his being the main representative – and, among the candidates, often the only representative – of many important values, principles, and desires that many or most Americans actually believe but they're being constantly intimidated into hiding these beliefs. Since August, the support for Trump has risen. These days, polls indicate that he may get 35... more »

Scientists Reveal That Dolphins Speak In A Holographic Language
New scientific research suggests that dolphins speak to each other using a type of holographic language that may be understood by humans. Scientists in Miami and the UK announced that they have successfully created the first 3-D images using the data taken from recordings of dolphin echolocation. Rawstory.com reports: “Our recent success has left us all speechless,” said research team leader Jack Kassewitz, of SpeakDolphin.com. “We now think it is safe to speculate that dolphins may employ a ‘sono-pictorial’ form of language, a language of pictures that they share with each other. High Fructose Corn Syrup Has Just Changed Its Name
Food producers have a myriad of tricks up their sleeves in hiding the fact that dangerous food ingredients lurk in products that consumers would otherwise chose not to buy. This has happened with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) since various scientific studies linked it to obesity, diabetes, and autism. The Navy's $4 Billion Experiment
*Bloomberg editorial*:* Ahoy, the Navy's $4 Billion Experiment* The U.S. Navy's newest destroyer did something amazing this week: It floated. As absurd as it sounds, it was worth finding out whether this $4-billion-plus boondoggle is at least a seaworthy boondoggle. And at least there won’t be 32 of these ships, which was the Pentagon's previous plan. Now that the Zumwalt is built -- and assuming it won’t tip over in bad weather, which is a worry -- the military will use it to test new techniques and technologies. A priority should be using this expensive experiment to save mone... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"
"This dance is to the death. Along the way, as these two large galaxies duel, a cosmic bridge of stars, gas, and dust currently stretches over 75,000 light-years and joins them. The bridge itself is strong evidence that these two immense star systems have passed close to each other and experienced violent tides induced by mutual gravity. As further evidence, the face-on spiral galaxy on the right, also known as NGC 3808A, exhibits many young blue star clusters produced in a burst of star formation. We are born equipped to experience a complex array of diverse emotions. Many of us, however, are uncomfortable confronting our most powerful emotions.
