I’ve been thinking about this press release issued by Colonel Blanchard that has the skeptics in such turmoil and I must confess worries me a bit as well. There just doesn’t seem to be any logic in it if we start with the premise that they thought they were finding parts of an alien spacecraft on the debris field. But as I was driving across Nebraska, which is fairly boring, I got to thinking about this and what the press release actually said. The terminology is important and the lack of any real detail is also important. If we look at what was said about what was found on the ra...more »

*For registration information, click here.* *by Ken* As regular readers know, the New York Transit Museum is one of my favorite institutions in the city, but I tend to write mostly about NYTM programs that are of direct interest to me, at the expense of others that don't affect me. Notably, the museum makes a major effort to be family-friendly, and it's always great to know that so many parents take advantage of this opportunity to bring the little ones to be entertained and informed. Next Sunday morning's event, though, is even more special -- a "Special Day for Special Kids,"...more »

*"Free Will?"* by Chet Raymo “In an essay in the 14 May, 2009 issue of “Nature”, German biologist Martin Heisenberg asks the question: "Is free will an illusion?" And he answers: No. We are free, says Heisenberg, if our actions are self-generated, and not mere responses to external stimuli. But how can they be self-generated in a world of cause and effect? As befitting the son of Werner Heisenberg, father of the Uncertainty Principle, Martin invokes the stochastic nature of quantum mechanics. Presumably, randomly firing neurons equal free will. One does not have to be consciously...more »
*"Answering the Call:* *Taking Responsibility for Your Destiny"* by Madisyn Taylor, The DailyOM "Each and every day you have the opportunity to answer your own call and take action toward creating the life you want. There are those of us who believe that our lives are predestined and that we should resign ourselves to our lots in life. Yet the truth is that it is up to each one of us to decide what that destiny will be. While each of us is born with a life purpose, it is up to us whether or not we will say yes to fulfilling it. *“The Stone”* by Paulo Coelho "A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable thi...more »
*“Synchronicity and Magical Thinking”* By Synchrosecrets.com “Synchronicity and magical thinking are close friends. They may even be Siamese twins who share a common heart. But what is magical thinking? Elias Howe had an idea about a machine with a needle that would penetrate cloth. He fiddled around with various ideas – a hole through the middle of the needle, for instance – but nothing worked. One night, he dreamed he was taken prisoner by a group of cannibals who danced around him with spears. Howe noticed that the spears all had holes near the tip. When he woke up, he realized ...more »

The Washington Post has an excellent story regarding the poor performance of the wealthiest Arab countries when it comes to the plight of Syrian refugees: The world has been transfixed in recent weeks by the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe, an influx of migrants unprecedented since World War II. … A fair amount of attention has fallen on the failure of many Western governments to adequately address the burden on Syria's neighboring countries, which are struggling to host the brunt of the roughly 4 million Syrians forced out of the country by its civil war. … Less ire, though, ...more »
*Chevron Corp. v. Yaiguaje* 2015 SCC 42 holds, perhaps surprisingly: I agree with the Ontario Court of Appeal and the motion judge that the approach favoured by Chevron is sound neither in law nor in policy. Canadian courts, like many others, have adopted a generous and liberal approach to the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. To recognize and enforce such a judgment, the only prerequisite is that the foreign court had a real and substantial connection with the litigants or with the subject matter of the dispute, or that the tradition...more »

*by Gaius Publius* This is a tale of three videos. As you know, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote an op-ed recently in which he discussed Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. Here's part of what he said (my occasional emphasis): Ernest Hemingway once said that courage was “grace under pressure.” Two presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, have recently tested this proposition. And how each man responded revealed the type of person he is and the type of president he would make: Trump authored his own doom, and Sanders opened immense new possibilities as a compassionate per...more »

*National Journal:* *John Kerry, Avoiding Iran Deal Victory Lap, Stays on Defense* In a speech Wednesday after the administration secured a crucial Senate vote, the secretary of State continued to decry a now-unlikely rejection. The Obama administration just got what it needed to ensure the health of the Iran nuclear deal, but John Kerry isn’t taking a victory lap. In a hour-long speech Wednesday morning, Kerry betrayed none of the confidence the administration was likely feeling after securing its crucial 34th Senate vote in support of the agreement. [image: E-8C Joint STARS]The US Air Force’s $6 billion programme to replace the Boeing 707-based Northrop Grumman E-8C “JSTARS” is shaping up as a battle between platform providers rather than the primes, with Boeing, Bombardier and Gulfstream locked in a three-way contest for the 17-aircraft order. The prime motivation for radar-carrying aircraft competition is to drastically cut the operating and maintenance cost of the E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) by migrating to a modern “business jet” – specifically an aircraft with 80% less fuel consumption than...more »
[image: Scorpion tactical jet]After asking state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) to stop work on the intermediate jet trainers (IJT), the Indian Air Force (IAF) is now keen on the US offer of Textron’s AirLand Scorpion light-attack and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft. The IAF badly needs an IJT due to delays by HAL, which has been working on an IJT since 1997. Senior IAF officials believe that the twin-seat platform of the Textron’s ISR aircraft can also be used as an intermediate jet trainer. Sources have indicated during the forthcoming visit of Pr...more »

U.S. military satellites have been tracking the Russian spy ship since it was spotted in the north Atlantic last month and slowly began transiting toward its next destination -- Cuba. A senior military official said the ship is now about 300 miles off the coast of the U.S., as it heads toward the island. Another senior defense official told Fox N...more »
[image: Hai Lung (Zwaardvis) class SSK]Taiwan has allocated NT$3 billion (S$130.2 million) over four years, beginning next year, to launch a long-awaited programme for the island to build its own diesel-electric submarines. It is the first in a plan that has been talked about since the early 2000s, when a deal with the US for eight diesel-electric submarines fell through because of technical and political constraints. The spending was set out in the defence ministry's budget for 2016. The plan comes as other navies in the region expand their submarine fleets, in part to create a st...more »

It is hard to say much when economists discuss something called the market. All lack a good understanding and know its natural weaknesses either. Markets need a form of regulation properly scaled to the capabilities of the participants who also need to be expanding in number but never in dominance. Get it wrong and crisis ensues, yet there are plenty of incentives to temporary get it wrong. Our more serious problem happens to be monopoly dealing in many industry sectors brought about by excess capital often used to buy out small participants who are acting as price sett...more »
