What the Other GOP Candidates Can Learn from Trump

[image: 2016 Republican candidates_forum__1438686374_70.119.142.63] According to polls, the No. 1 thing Donald Trump’s fans like about him is that he “tells it like it is.” I think his fans are wrong about this. But that’s a column -- actually a lot of columns -- for another...more »

Is the Republican Party Already Circling The Drain?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 24 minutes ago
Even Republican voters hate the assholes they elected to Congress. Most of the dumbed-down, Foxified party base is in full revolt against their own party's twisted establishment, whether or not they realize that they themselves put them in their positions. The *Des Moines Register* Iowa poll that came out Sunday shows that among the party's base, approval of Republicans in Congress is horrendous. 54% say they are unsatisfied, and on top of that another 21% say they are "mad as hell" at the Republicans in Congress. That makes 75%. Among Democrats, only 8% are "mad as hell" at thei... more »

2015 Canadian General Election Anthem: Harperman

CM at LILITH NEWS - 2 hours ago
This is officially the anthem of the 2015 Canadian general election. "Harperman" was created by Canadian singer / songwriter / scientist Tony Turner. Remember a vote for the Liberals or the NDP are both good, but you may want to vote strategically in your riding if you want to make sure Stephen Harper is kicked out of office. The good news is Stephen Harper keeps falling in the polls.

Golfers and their endless search for accessories

CM at LILITH NEWS - 2 hours ago
Traveling On The Golf Course Your golf cart is something that you probably have pride in as it's taken on the course. There are different sizes that you can see on the course as well as various styles. Some of them are personalized with fun paint schemes and accessories while others have the natural colors that are seen when the cart is purchased. One thing that all carts have in common is that they will need replacement parts at some point. Golf cart parts can be purchased online or at businesses that sell off-road vehicles. Open Letter To Prime Minister Stephen Harper - Smoking in Canada

Open Letter To Prime Minister Stephen Harper: Want to be remembered as doing something good for the benefit of the health of all Canadians? *Make smoking illegal.* It doesn't matter what people are smoking, whether it be tobacco, marijuana or crack cocaine - they are all known to be harmful to the health of Canadians. Recent lawsuits in Quebec, Ontario and other provinces have already proven this, as do thousands of scientific studies. I'm Thinking of Becoming a Unitarian

thwap at thwap's schoolyard - 2 hours ago
When I participated in an "Anti-Torture Caravan" with the magnificent Matthew Behrens, (who would have thought that such a thing was ever necessary?) I was struck at how almost every place we stopped was a church. The spaces set aside for people to collectively participate in larger, non-commercial initiatives were generally churches. What is "public space"? Where can you go to meet with others and not have the owner, or some agent of the owner, evict you for any reason whatsoever or no reason at all? Where can people without means congregate; socialize, without being told to "mo... more »

September 1: The importance of fiction.

Graeme Decarie at The Decarie Report - 3 hours ago
Damn. I spent hours on a long blog - and lost it all. So this will deal with the same themes, but be much shorter. Norbert Cunningham's column today deserves a careful read and some serious thinking. It's about what he calls national 'fictions'. We live in a world of reality - hills, trees, sun. But we also, as societies, depend on things which depend on fiction. A piece of paper money, even of a thousand dollars - has no value in reality. It's just a piece of paper. But we make it into something important to us. National boundaries have no reality. They hadn't existed for million... more »

The Pacific War (Photo Gallery)

*History in Orbit*:* A Look At The War in the Pacific* Some of the largest atrocities in world history took place within Europe during World War II. However, the Mediterranean theater wasn’t the only battleground. On the other side of the world, another war was being fought against an entirely different enemy. The Pacific War began with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and ran until the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945. Among the countries involved, there were a total of 6 million military deaths and a staggering 26 million civilian... more »

French Fry Pancakes (Potato Latkes)

Debra Hawkins at Housewife Eclectic - 15 hours ago
A couple months ago I bought my husband a julienne peeler so he could make more zoodles dishes. It's kind of sad how much we love zoodles... But, being who he is, he got bored with zoodles and wanted to find something else to do with the peeler. Letting his brain juices run wild he got stuck and ended up fixated on potatoes. Kind of boring, right? That's what I thought too, but the final product ended up amazing. He made potato latkes, or potato pancakes. They're a simple dish, akin to a hashbrown, but so flavorful, crisp and satisfying. My picky six-year-old daughter loved them a... more »

America's 5 Worst Military Defeats

War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 15 hours ago
USS Arizona *James Jay Carafano, National Interest:* *America's 5 Worst Military Defeats* *5 battles from U.S. history where losing wound up putting the nation on the path to victory.* Defeat can be an integral instrument of victory. War is a competition between thinking, scheming, determined adversaries. Gaining a decisive advantage over the enemy is the ultimate high-ground. Sometimes this critical competitive edge comes from losing battles—when the loss sparks the actions that lead to winning. For much of the 19th and 20th century, the Western way of war was battle-centric. B... more »

Sunday morning Bernie was on CNN's *State of the Union* with Jake Tapper. Right from the beginning of the interview Tapper tried getting Bernie to attack Hillary, which he has refused to do. His standard answer is usually that he knows her, likes her and respects her, even if they differ on several issues that are crucial to America's working families. Tapper did manage to get Bernie to lay out some key examples of policy positions where there is a clear contrast with Clinton's neo-liberal-- if not corporatist and Wall Street-inspired-- agenda. Good Medicine: Do As Much Nothing As Possible by Sayer JI

Good Medicine: Do As Much Nothing As Possible by Sayer Ji Green Med Info 28 August 2015 *''The delivery of good medical care is to do as much nothing as possible'' * ~ Samuel Shem, *The House of God* Medicine is undergoing an existential crisis today. Its core value proposition – to help and not hurt -- is failing to manifest. Patients are suffering. Doctors are suffering. The only exuberant party on the battlefield against disease is the pharmaceutical industry*. Both CMS and ATLAS see \(5.2\TeV\) dijet (and trijet)

Luboš Motl at The Reference Frame - 22 hours ago
One month ago, I discussed two intriguing dijet events seen by the CMS collaboration at the LHC. They had a pretty high mass. An event from the \(8\TeV\) run in 2012 had the total mass of \(5.15\TeV\) while a fresh event from the \(13\TeV\) run in 2015 had the total mass of \(5.0\TeV\) or so. Two collisions isn't a terribly high number so these events, even though their energy is really higher than the energy of the "following" high-energy events, may deserve to be ignored even more strictly than the bumps in many other searches. Perhaps, to make you more excited, you were saying, ... more »

(Shady Ministering Is a Trump Ideal)  Conscience of a Poser  (Trump's Vulgarity A Big Selling Point with Evangelicals)  "W" Set a Tough Course Which All Republican Klown Kandidates Ache to Follow

Do you need any more insight into how easy it is to fool ignorant Americans (who constitute a much larger part of the voting population than anyone would care to believe)? What I enjoy most from the article below is the commenters who are still incredulous that the Conservatives haven't learned anything about governing from their errors. As if they were "governing." Fr. Mun Back in Gangjeong Village

Catholic Father Mun has been away from Gangjeong village on Jeju Island for the past couple of weeks. He had minor heart surgery a week or so ago when the doctors put in a stent to help ease arterial blockage. On my last day in the village he called to apologize (can you imagine that?) for not being able to greet me while I was on Jeju. Fr. Mun is credited with bringing many activists from around South Korea to help the struggling villagers in Gangjeong fight against the construction of the Navy base. He and Jeju Bishop Kang recently successfully raised funds across their cou... more »

The Irving press did notice the story that governor Scott has warned of the need for a wall between Canada and the U.S. to protect the U.S. from ---whatever. Good for the Irving press. This would all be very funny if some U.S. leaders and a great many U.S. citizens weren't buying it. But they are buying it. It began with Trump's stunning rise in the polls after he proposed building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. The U.S. has enormous problems, few of which have been add... more »

Space Warfighting Technology: A Key Obstacle to Nuclear Disarmament

The United States of America and Islam Have Nothing Fundamental In Common

Peter Cresswell at Not PC - 1 day ago
*Guest post by Andy Clarkson* *Five years ago, President Barack Obama delivered a speech in Cairo, Egypt, whose many errors are still widely embraced today. He declared “civilization's debt to Islam” and sought “common ground” between Islam and the United States, arguing “they overlap, and share common principles”. “Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance,” he said, and its culture and its many innovations have “given us majestic arches and soaring spires; timeless poetry and cherished music; elegant calligraphy and places of peaceful contemplation.” Analysing the speech and its... more »

"A Look to the Heavens"

“While hunting for comets in the skies above 18th century France, astronomer Charles Messier diligently kept a list of the things he encountered that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on his now famous not-a-comet list. In fact, 21st century astronomers would identify it as a planetary nebula, but it's not a planet either, even though it may appear round and planet-like in a small telescope. Messier 27 (M27) is an excellent example of a gaseous emission nebula created as a sun-like star runs out of nuclear fuel in its core. The nebula forms as the star's outer layers are... more »
