A New Free Trade Agreement Opportunity for Taiwan

Michael Mazza at The National Interest - 21 hours ago
*Michael Mazza* *economy, * [image: Reuters] With a foreign trade agreement, the Trump administration would leave a positive, enduring mark on the U.S.-Taiwan relationship. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen announced today that her government will ease restrictions on American beef and pork product imports. This is welcome news. The restrictions have been a thorn in the side of bilateral relations for far too long, with those limitations suppressing US agricultural exports to Taiwan since the early 2000s. To Taiwan’s detriment, those barriers have also stood in the way of a closer bi... more »

The One Percent Blunder: How a Simple But Fatal Math Mistake by US Covid-19 Experts Caused the World to Panic and Order Lockdowns

Malcolm Kendrick at 1 day ago
[image: undefined] In February, US Covid guru Anthony Fauci predicted the virus was ‘akin to a severe flu’ and would therefore kill around 0.1 percent of people. Then fatality rate predictions were somehow mixed up to make it look ten times WORSE. When you strip everything else out, the reason for lockdown comes from a single figure: one percent. This was the prediction that Covid, if left unchecked, would kill around one percent of us. You may not think that percentage is enormous, but one percent of the population of the world is 70 million people – and that’s a lot. It would me... more »

More Tiresome Brexit Posturing

Phil at All That Is Solid ... - 1 day ago
How's Brexit going? According to the latest bombshell heavily trailed all day, it's *proceeding according to plan*. This morning, the papers led with the news Downing Street was planning on tearing up withdrawal agreement provisions struck last October. You'll remember it. The deal Theresa May took to the Commons and had it rejected on three occasions (and voted down by Boris Johnson on two of them), but was suddenly a last minute master-stroke once Johnson was in the saddle and took it to Brussels himself. So good is the withdrawal agreement that the Prime Minister took to *The Ti... more »

Lavrov "'Russia, Turkey advance in liberating Idlib" 2018 to 2020

Penny at Penny for your thoughts - 1 day ago
*Better then two years ago it was stated here that a slow liberation of Idlib was the plan Russia and Turkey had agreed to. It seemed the most sensible when one considered the entirety of the "birth pangs" situation. However, there seemed to be an on line contingent that wanted a full out losing, for Syria, battle. One that would have only seen the US and their PKK allies taking advantage of the resulting chaos. Judging by Lavrov's recent statements.. it seems my assessment of two years ago was correct. * *We'll start with Lavrov's most recent statements and then stroll down memory ... more »

Bulletins From The Trailing Edge Of The Pandemic

If it can work anywhere, it can work here. I live in a county in NW PA, with relatively small population (50K or so). And our schools are all open. We have been subject to the same rules as the rest of the state, and like pretty much everything in PA, the folks in charge have made their rules based on Pittsburgh, Philly and Harrisburg. This is Trump country, so plenty of folks are anti-maskers, but we haven't had any of those ugly assaults. I think we benefit from one aspect of small town life-- when you meet that minimum wage worker at the door of the business, you probably alread... more »

Repairing the Rule of Law: An Agenda for Post-Trump Reform

One should not assume the result of the election, but it is nonetheless worth asking the question: What should be done in a post-Trump world to restore the rule of law? Of Trump’s many excesses, his assault on legal norms has to rank high in terms of damage to fundamental values that form ... more »

Could China Soon Close the Military Gap With the West?

Peter Suciu at The National Interest - 1 day ago
*Peter Suciu* *Security, Asia* The question of China’s military capability has been on experts's minds for many years. *Key Point*: China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is on track to become the dominant force in the Asia-Pacific. In an article from the Brookings Institution titled “China’s Hollow Military,” writers Bates Gill and Michael E. *Mackenzie Eaglen* *Security, Americas* [image: Reuters] The truth is that public safety and national security are equally important.
