A Cabinet And Other Shuffles
Owen Gray, Northern Reflections - 14 hours ago
Justin Trudeau was working from Mackenzie King's playbook when he appeared before the Finance Committee last week. The general consensus seems to be that he emerged (relatively) unscathed. But his problems are not over. Finance Minister Bill Morneau has not come through all of this as well as Trudeau has. Susan Delacourt writes that a cabinet shuffle may be in the offing: A cabinet shuffle is looking increasingly likely too, sooner rather than later. As my colleague Heather Scoffield has written, Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s shelf life may be limited in the wake of WE, given ho...

Cable TV Strikes Back: Charter Adds 102,000 Cable Subscribers Last Quarter
Stephen Silver, The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Stephen Silver* *Technology, * How did Charter do it? Per a transcript of the company’s earnings call, it had a lot to do with Charter’s offer of free service following the start of the coronavirus pandemic, as many customers have stuck with the service and began paying for it. Throughout the last few years, cord-cutting has continued to accelerate, a trend that has only increased due to the coronavirus pandemic. America’s largest pay-TV companies, per an analysis published in mid-May lost 2 million subscribers in the first quarter, and most of the companies that had announced ...
The Militia Movement's Warning of Excessive Federal Power Has Come True. Where Are the Militias?
Amy Cooter, The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Amy Cooter* *Politics, Americas* [image: Reuters] The movement’s public face is smaller and harder to find without insider knowledge. Militias and many other Second Amendment advocates have long argued that their primary desire to own firearms – often, many of them – is rooted in a need to protect themselves and their families from a tyrannical federal government, or to discourage the government from becoming tyrannical in the first place. But with the mayor of a major U.S. city warning that “tyranny and dictatorship” have already arrived on the streets – in the shape of unide...
Why a Nuclear-Free North Korea Is A Dream That Needs to Die

*Doug Bandow* *Security, Asia* [image: https://www.reutersconnect.com/all?id=tag%3Areuters.com%2C2020%3Anewsml_RC2Z1I9W7M31&share=true] Washington needs a reality check if it is to craft sound policy when dealing with Pyongyang. Last week Secretary of State Mike Pompeo testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that U.S. policy toward North Korea continues to be based on complete denuclearization. Unfortunately, this goal is a fantasy which ensures that the administration will continue to achieve nothing involving the Korean peninsula, other than extending the exist...
COVID-19's Legacy on the Rocks
Rachael Holmes, Alice Fugagnoli, Jan Zalasiewicz, The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Rachael Holmes, Alice Fugagnoli, Jan Zalasiewicz* *Science, World* The future is not yet set in stone, but in the very long run the rocks will tell the story of which road we collectively take. COVID-19 is a major global shock that has turned our lives upside down, but how does it measure up on the grand billion-year scale of Earth history? The answer puts our human dramas in the largest perspective – and may yet be critical to all our futures. The pandemic won’t leave a direct record of the viruses for geologists of the far future to investigate, as viruses don’t fossilise. An...

ESPN finds NBA oppresses people in China
trinko, Conversations about the obvious - 14 hours ago
Because the NBA is about making money, except when protesting in America, it's censored speech directed at pointing out its buddy buddy relationship with the tyrannical Chinese government. Even as China is sending millions of Muslims to concentration camps and destroying democracy in Hong Kong the NBA is silent. But let one innocent Black man be killed by cops and the NBA is all over attacking America. Now an ESPN investigation shows that the NBA was aware of child abuse in NBA academies in China and did nothing about it. Chinese coaches beat young men in NBA affiliated academies b...

Gibbon’s Description of Commodus’s Gladiatorial Performance
Unknown, The Conservative Socrates - 14 hours ago
In November 192, Commodus became the first Roman Emperor to enter the arena (during the Plebeian Games) as a gladiator. He believed that he had the attributes of a Roman Hercules, and no man or beast could kill him. In Edward Gibbon’s *History of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire*, (Volume 1, Chapter 4), there is a colorful account of Commodus’s feats as a star-gladiator at the Plebeian Games: “Whether he aimed at the head or heart of the animal, the wound was alike certain and mortal. With arrows whose point was shaped into the form of crescent, Commodus often intercepted th...

For the Symposium on Mark Tushnet, Taking Back the Constitution: Activist Judges and the Next Age of American Law (Yale University Press 2020). Julia Azari Notorious Supreme Court decisions are central to theories about regime decline in American politics. Leading up to the Civil War it was the *Dred Scott*decision, which encapsulated not only a court set on preserving the rights of slave states and slave owners, but also the evil of a president who sought to influence the decision. The Court is also a key villain in the drama of the New Deal, striking down the president’s new progr...
What the Ocean Under Antarctic Means for Climate Change
Craig Stevens, Christina Hulbe, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Craig Stevens, Christina Hulbe* *Climate Change, Antarctica* [image: Reuters] The hundreds of metres of ice isolate the ocean cavity from the furious winds and freezing air temperatures of Antarctica. Jules Verne sent his fictional submarine, the Nautilus, to the South Pole through a hidden ocean beneath a thick ice cap. Written 40 years before any explorer had reached the pole, his story was nevertheless only half fiction. There are indeed hidden ocean cavities around Antarctica, and our latest research explores how the ocean circulates underneath the continent’s ice shelves ...
Before Aerial Refueling, This Plane Helped The Air Force Fight Long Distance

Despite Maximum Pressure Sanctions, North Korea's Economy Grew in 2019

*Daniel R. DePetris* *Economics, Asia* U.S. officials need to stop burying their heads in the sand and start embracing the facts. And the facts are as clear as day. North Korea is a nuclear weapons power whether we like it or not. Every day Washington believes it can coerce the North into downgrading its status is another day more realistic policy objectives are left rotting on the shelf. In case one needed any additional evidence that U.S. and U.N. Security Council sanctions on North Korea were failing to achieve their overall objective, look no further than the latest report fr...
Timeouts Improve Kids' Behavior - If Done Right

With parents spending more time with their children than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their need for discipline that works is greater than ever. Fortunately, there are some proven techniques. As a developmental psychologist, I believe that anyone raising little kids could learn how to better use timeouts. This disciplinary technique is among the best ways to stop frustrating child behavior, like not listening, breaking family rules or being overly agg...
Racial Health Disparities Are Rooted in Racism
Eric Kyere, The National Interest - 14 hours ago
*Eric Kyere* *Health, * [image: Reuters] To fix what is wrong today, an understanding of the inequities of the past is an imperative. Some critics of Black Lives Matter say the movement itself is racist. Their frequent counterargument: All lives matter. Lost in that view, however, is a historical perspective. Look back to the late 18th century, to the very beginnings of the U.S., and you will see Black lives in this country did not seem to matter at all. Foremost among the unrelenting cruelties heaped upon enslaved people was the lack of health care for them. Infants and child...

The flu is dangerous for kids but we don't shut down schools every flu season
trinko, Conversations about the obvious - 14 hours ago
In the 2018-2019 flu season 21,012 kids, between the ages of 5 and 17, were hospitalized for the flu. That's 39.2 per 100K. To date COVID19 has hospitalized 5.8 per 100K. Similarly in the flu killed 0.4 per 100K about 4x higher than the China virus rate to date. A perfectly valid counter argument is that the flu numbers are from when schools were in session and the Corona virus numbers are from when the schools were shut. The obvious response to that is that the Europe has opened schools and seen no rise in deaths. The simple reality is, thanks be to God, kids are pretty much imm...
Facebook saying gays can't want to be straight

Facebook is in the process of implementing a plan to ban discussion of converse therapy which is a way to help people suffering from same sex attraction heal themselves. The first thing to note is that whether you use the Bible or science a person who is sexually attracted to people of the same sex has a problem. Scripture clearly condemns active homosexuality--but not individuals who suffer from same sex attraction-- despite what some gays claim: *Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.In the s...
