Labour NEC Ballot: Vote Left

When I've finished writing this blog post, I'll be heading over to my inbox to send my National Executive Committee votes off for Yasmine Dar, Rachel Garnham and Jon Lansman. For obvious reasons this internal contest has been portrayed as pro-Jez or anti-Jez; you're either for him or against him. Yet it's worth remembering this isn't a case of Corbyn supporters motivated by the Labour leader's celebrity or unassuming style. It's about politics, and the Labour right, who don't really have any politics beyond hating the Labour left, would do well to remember the appeal of Corbynism is... more »

The Treasures of Chaco Canyon Are Threatened by Drilling

White Wolf at White Wolf - 8 hours ago
Ryan Zinke, the secretary of interior, has made oil and gas drilling on public lands a top priority, but he fails to acknowledge that it is also the mission of his department to conserve and protect significant natural and cultural resources. Recent administrations have tried to reconcile these inherent conflicts by exempting places known to contain cultural sites from areas permitted for drilling, a practice that has only minimally affected the opportunities for resource exploration. It’s a matter of balance and it has largely worked, but this administration has yet to make the eff... more »

Blue SuperMoon (With Halo Around) Rises in All It's Glory in South Dakota

White Wolf at White Wolf - 8 hours ago
Supermoons are a rare type of full moon. They appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than normal. While the full moon rises about once per month, supermoons can only occur a few times per year — max. That's because the timing has to be just right. The Moon takes about 27.32 days to orbit Earth. During its orbit, the moon passes through two points: Perigee and apogee. Perigee is about 30,000 miles closer to Earth than apogee. A supermoon can only occur at perigee-syzygy, when the moon is full and at perigee simultaneously. This is rare because as the Earth revolves around the sun... more »

When is Colder Thermal Radiation Incident Upon a Warmer Body?

In my recent articles on thermal radiation physics (here and here), I showed that the consensus physics on thermal radiation is wrong in its belief that black body radiators near one another emit the same radiation as they would when isolated from one another and surrounded by an environment at T = 0K. That is, they do not each emit power per unit area as given by the Stefan-Boltzmann Law when they are in the vicinity of one another.
