Why a North Korean Hydrogen Bomb Could Be Asia's Next Nightmare

Paul Bracken at The National Interest - 13 hours ago
*Paul Bracken* *Security, Asia* It would be a big deal. Here's why. A hydrogen bomb fits North Korean nuclear strategy so perfectly that it’s likely to be a top priority program. Most discussion of North Korea’s nuclear effort focuses on matters of “can and when”. Can they miniaturize a nuclear weapon? Can they marry it to a missile? Can they build an ICBM that will reach the United States? Those are obviously important questions. But they don’t cover another fundamental question. What difference would it make if North Korea was to get a hydrogen bomb? A hydrogen (fusion) bomb... more »

Trump prefers a management style in which even compliments can come laced with a bite, and where enduring snubs and belittling jokes, even in public, is part of the job. How Dopamine And Opioid Systems Modulate Responses To The Pain Of Others

News Staff at Science 2.0 blogs - 14 hours ago
Capacity for vicarious experiences is a fundamental aspect of human social behavior. For example, seeing others experiencing pain can activate brain circuits that are known to support actual first-hand experience of pain. A new study has revealed how the human brain’s opioid system modulates responses to other people’s pain. The less opioid receptors the participants had in their brain, the stronger were their emotion and pain circuits’ response to seeing others in distress. Similar association was not found for the dopamine system despite its known importance in pain management. ... more »

Have We Entered the Corporate Debt Danger Zone?

A Political Junkie at Viable Opposition - 15 hours ago
Thanks to the Federal Reserve and its central bank peers, the world is now awash in debt. This is particularly the case in the corporate sector where debt has been accrued to record levels, an issue that is of concern, particularly when one of two scenarios play out; a rise in interest rates or a slowing of the economy. Was the V2 a complete waste of time and money?

arclein at Terra Forming Terra - 20 hours ago
What the V2 lacked was accuracy. Had the Germans retained air supremacy and could actually fly spotter missions, then these could even have nicely countered the strategic bombing imposed by the allies. In the end it was simply too little too late. Recall though that the warhead was a half ton. Successful targeting of factories may not have been impossible as the technology progressed. What this informs us of is that the effect itself was serious and real but otherwise insignificant against strategic bombing. Germany lost to the weight of numbers eliminating strategic mobility.... more »

*"Now I Become Myself"* “Now I become myself. It's taken Time, many years and places, I have been dissolved and shaken, Worn other people's faces, Run madly, as if Time were there, Terribly old, crying a warning, "hurry, you will be dead before -----" (What? Before you reach the morning? or the end of the poem, is clear? Or love safe in the walled city?) Now to stand still, to be here, Feel my own weight and density! Now there is time and Time is young. O, in this single hour I live All of myself and do not move, I, the pursued, who madly ran, Stand still, stand still, and stop the Sun!”... more »

"Why?"

noreply@blogger.com (Coyote Prime) at Running 'Cause I Can't Fly - 23 hours ago
"At last, the answer why. The lesson that had been so hard to find, so difficult to learn, came quick and clear and simple. The reason for problems is to overcome them. Why, that’s the very nature of man, I thought, to press past limits, to prove his freedom. It isn’t the challenge that faces us, that determines who we are and what we are becoming, but the way we meet the challenge, whether we toss a match at the wreck or work our way through it, step by step, to freedom." - Richard Bach, “Nothing by Chance”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is pushing for stricter sentencing in criminal cases. AP Photo/Frank Franklin II Today, the United States is a world leader in incarceration, but this has not always been the case. For most of the 20th century, the U.S. incarcerated about 100 people per 100,000 residents – below the current world average. However, starting in 1972, our incarceration rate began to increase steadily. By 2008, we reached a peak rate of 760 incarcerated persons per 100,000 residents. The increase in incarceration cannot be explained by a rise in crime, as crime rates fluc... more »
