Bernie's Revolution Has Taken Off And Could Help Power Democrats Into Congressional Wins Despite A Hopeless DCCC

This morning we looked at a new bill introduced this week by Ro Khanna and Beto O'Rourke that would end the pervasive influence of PACs on Congress. It's another example of how Democrats are getting behind Bernie Sanders' most salient ideas. Ro Khanna endorsed Bernie during the 2016 cycle and Beto O'Rourke had endorsed Hillary. Both are strong supporters of the core progressive principles that made Bernie's campaign so popular among Democrats and independents-- like muscular campaign finance reform. Writing this week for *Newsweek*, Tim Marcin explained how Bernie's ideas are winn... more »

This and that for your Thursday reading. - Julia Smith argues that one of the primary responses to the recent reports about banks exploiting consumers (and pressuring staff to carry out their plans) should be a drive to organize workers: Banking is often viewed as an industry offering secure white-collar jobs with good wages. In reality, many non-management bank employees, including tellers and call centre workers, face the same issues as other non-unionized private sector service workers: precarious employment, low wages and stressful work environments. In 2007, for example, worke... more »

Violence In Iraq, March 15-21, 2017

Joel Wing at MUSINGS ON IRAQ - 14 hours ago
The number of security incidents dipped in Iraq during the third week of March 2017, but casualties remained relatively the same from the week before. There were 142 incidents reported in the press from March 15-21, down from 170 the week before, and 179 the first week of March. The dip in violence might be a result of the stalemate in the battle for Mosul. The government forces have been stuck in the Old City section of west Mosul for the last few weeks leading to fewer clashes with the Islamic State. The third week of February when the assault upon west Mosul began there were 7... more »

A fascinating new study by Anne Case and her husband, Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton, looks at the rising level of morbidity and mortality among middle-aged white, non-Hispanic men and women in the United States. This recent increase reverses decades of progress made as mortality rates for middle-aged Americans fell over the decades prior to the 1990s. Here is a summary of their findings. Who feels the pain of science research budget cuts?

Bruce Weinberg, Professor of Economics, The Ohio State University at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
Not much science will get done without the money to fund people and equipment. Michael Pereckas, CC BY Science funding is intended to support the production of new knowledge and ideas that develop new technologies, improve medical treatments and strengthen the economy. The idea goes back to influential engineer Vannevar Bush, who headed the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II. And the evidence is that science funding does have these effects. But, at a practical level, science funding from all sources supports research projects, the people who work... more »

To really help US workers, we should invest in robots

Nikolaus Correll, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, University of Colorado at Science + Technology – The Conversation - 1 day ago
University students experiment with human-robot interaction and autonomous manipulation, two elements of manufacturing's future. Nikolaus Correll, CC BY-ND America’s manufacturing heyday is gone, and so are millions of jobs, lost to modernization. Despite what Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin might think, the National Bureau of Economic Research and Silicon Valley executives, among many others, know it’s already happening. And a new report from PwC estimates that 38 percent of American jobs are at “high risk” of being replaced by technology within the next 15 years. But how soon ... more »

A Right Wing Fifth Column In Brighton Beach? West Hollywood? Bustleton?

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 1 day ago
Growing up in Brooklyn I had never met a Republican. And they didn't run for office where I lived either. Republicans were sleaze-ball used car salesmen like Nixon. They were in other parts of the country, not anywhere near Kings Highway. When Senator John Kennedy needed to demonstrate the enthusiasm hard core liberal communities had for him-- he was a kind of conservative senator for a Democrat-- he showed up during the 1960 campaign at Dubrow's on Kings Highway, a couple blocks from my house on 17th Street and Avenue P. My mother took me to see him. The crowd was adulatory. (Just... more »

Constitutional Q&A: The Legality of Stop and ID Procedures

John W. Whitehead at 1 day ago
[image: undefined] We are not supposed to be living in a “show me your papers” society. Despite this, the US government has recently introduced measures allowing police and other law enforcement officials to stop individuals (citizens and noncitizens alike), demand they identify themselves, and subject them to pat-downs, warrantless searches, and interrogations. These actions fly in the face of longstanding constitutional safeguards forbidding such police state tactics. In 2017, for example, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents boarded a plane at New York’s JFK Airport and de... more »

Is Brexit the beginning of the end for international cooperation?

William Magnuson, Associate Professor of Law, Texas A&M University at Politics + Society – The Conversation - 1 day ago
It’s official: Britain is done with Europe. Prime Minister Theresa May has formally triggered the process for withdrawing from the European Union, ensuring that the United Kingdom, one of the largest and most prosperous countries in the EU, will soon leave the 28-member bloc. While the process could drag on for two years or more, the Brexit decision serves as a historic and stinging rebuke to proponents of a unified Europe. Perhaps more importantly, it calls into question the very future of the EU. Pro-Europe commentators, on both sides of the Atlantic, have argued that Brexit ... more »

“What will become of these galaxies? Spiral galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 are passing dangerously close to each other, but each is likely to survive this collision. Typically when galaxies collide, a large galaxy eats a much smaller galaxy. In this case, however, the two galaxies are quite similar, each being a sprawling spiral with expansive arms and a compact core. As the galaxies advance over the next tens of millions of years, their component stars are unlikely to collide, although new stars will form in the bunching of gas caused by gravitational tides. *Click image for larger... more »
